A rotary slide valve for controlling the flow of molten material from a discharge opening of a holding vessel into an inlet of a rotatable casting mold has three valve plates which are in face-to-face contact. A first valve plate at the inflow side of the valve is fixed and is designed to abut the holding vessel peripherally of its discharge opening. A second valve plate at the discharge side of the valve is designed to engage the mold peripherally of the mold inlet and to rotate with the mold between two terminal positions. The third valve plate is sandwiched between the others and can be driven in rotation relative to both. Each of the valve plates is provided with a through opening. The valve is designed so that, at least in the two terminal positions of the discharge valve plate, the openings of all the valve plates can be brought into register and the openings of two of the valve plates can be brought out of register.

A valve combination is provided for controlling the flow of liquid metal through an orifice. The valve combination includes an electromagnetic flow control device and an on/off valve. The on/off valve includes an electrically conductive slider plate which is positioned sufficiently close to the electromagnetic flow control device to be inductively heated by the electromagnetic field generated thereby. The on/off valve permits the flow of liquid metal to be selectively stopped and started as desired. The valve combination is suitable for use with open pour and shrouded continuous casting or vessel pouring operations.

A slag control shape is releasably mounted on a cover for a molten metal vessel. An actuator is connected to a slag control shape release member to retract the release member from a first position engaged with the slag control shape to a second position separated from the slag control shape allowing the slag control shape to freely drop into the molten metal receptacle. The actuating end of the actuator is located at an easily accessible operator position for remote actuation of the release member. In one embodiment, the actuator is a flexible cable attached at one end to the release member mounted on the cover and having a second end located remote from the cover at an easily accessible operator position. In another embodiment, a pair of eccentric cams are mounted on the cover and the molten metal receptacle and pivot into engagement upon a downward force exerted on the actuator cable to retract the release member from engagement with the slag control shape.

The invention provides a method of controlling the flow of molten metal from a holding vessel such as a tundish through a discharge orifice into a receptacle such as a mould; the method comprising (i) providing within the holding vessel a flow control chamber comprising a down-flow chamber separate from but in fluid communication with the interior of the holding vessel, the down-flow chamber having an outlet at its lower end, said outlet leading to or forming part of the discharge orifice, and an opening towards or at its upper end; (ii) creating a gas pressure within the flow control chamber sufficient to allow molten metal from the holding vessel to pass through the opening to establish in the lower end of the down-flow chamber a column of molten metal with a volume of gas occupying the upper end of the flow control chamber and serving to separate the column of molten metal from the opening, whereby an equilibrium is established between molten metal passing through the opening and molten metal passing out through the discharge orifice such that the height of the column of molten metal in the down-flow chamber remains substantially constant; and (iii) (a) reducing the said volume of gas, thereby to increase the height of the column of molten metal and thus the flow rate through the discharge orifice, or (b) increasing the said volume of gas, thereby to reduce the height of the said column and thus the said flow rate. The flow control chamber suitably is a refractory body having a hollow interior divided by a central weir into up-flow and down-flow chambers. The invention also provides a refractory flow control chamber per se and a flow control system including the chamber.

A shut-off and control valve is used in regulating the discharge of molten metal from a metallurgical vessel into a continuous casting plant for continuous casting of a sheet, strip or slab having a relatively wide width dimension with respect to thickness dimension. The valve includes an elongated refractory stator having therein an elongated recess defined by a cylindrical inner surface. The stator has therethrough an elongated slot-like discharge channel, and the stator is mounted adjacent an elongated outlet opening of a metallurgical vessel. An elongated refractory rotor is rotated about a longitudinal axis and has a cylindrical peripheral outer surface arranged symmetrically about such axis and complementary to the inner surface of the stator. The rotor has therethrough an elongated slot-like flow channel. The rotor is fitted within the recess in the stator with the outer and inner surfaces of the rotor and stator, respectively, symmetrically positioned about the axis and in sealing contact with each other. Rotation of the rotor about the axis relative to the stator and/or axial movement of the rotor within the recess relative to the stator selectively bring the flow channel of the rotor relatively into and out of alignment with the discharge channel of the stator.

The inner pipe has adjacent an inner end thereof at a position inwardly of the opening therein a closure closing the interior of the inner pipe. The outer pipe defines therein a space forming a gas distribution chamber at a location confronting the closure. A gas, for example an inert gas, is introduced into the gas distribution chamber such that the gas passes therefrom between the sealing surfaces and into the openings.

A refractory shutoff assembly for controlling the discharge of molten metal from a metallurgical vessel includes a refractory inner pipe to be fixedly mounted in a bottom of the vessel, such inner pipe having therethrough at least one opening at a position to be above the vessel bottom. A refractory outer pipe is mounted about the inner pipe and has therethrough at least one opening. The outer pipe has a lower end with an annular end surface. The outer pipe is movable relative to the inner pipe axially thereof between an open position, whereat the opening in the outer pipe aligns with the opening in the inner pipe, and a closed position, whereat such openings are isolated to block molten metal discharge. The length of possible axial movement of the outer pipe relative to the inner pipe from the open position is sufficient to enable movement of the outer pipe to another closed position, whereat the openings are isolated from each other and whereat the annular end surface sealingly abuts on an annular surface extending around the inner pipe, thereby entirely enclosing the inner pipe.
