    摘要: An end preparation tool for pipe fittings includes an end preparation tool having a rotary cutting head with shaping bits carried thereon mounted on a base that also carries a universal clamping fixture for pipe fittings having end openings to be machined in preparation for welding. The clamping fixture includes workpiece engaging clamping pads that permit adjustment of the position of the workpiece relative to a pair of opposed clamping plates that normally secure the pipe fitting in place relative to the cutting head of the end preparation tool. The clamping fixture includes adjustment features that enable the fixture to be moved transversely relative to the cutting head, along the rotary axis of the cutting head and about a vertical axis that permits indexing of the clamping fixture relative to the tool cutting head. The workpiece engaging pads are disposed in an array that extends along a square and diagonal pattern of intersecting lines, and along lines perpendicular to the square lines between their intersections. By locating workpiece engaging pads in such a geometric array, virtually all conventional fittings can be accommodated between the clamping pads comprising the clamping fixture using a minimum number of pad elements. Several embodiments of clamping pads are described.

    摘要: This invention is an improved concept of the clamp shown in U.S. Pat. No. 3,736,629, as issued June 5, 1973. This clamping device has two C-shaped arms, each of which is an assembly of two plate-like members of sheet metal. These two arm assemblies are pivotally retained at one end with the plate-like members in an overlay condition. A pivot pin has an enlarged center portion which acts as a spacer and has two eccentric cam areas sized and spaced to actuate apertures formed in one of the arm pairs. Shouldered rivets retain these arm assemblies in spaced array and a stop pin secured in this pivot pin has a length sufficient to engage a secured rivet. At one limit of movement of the stop pin, the cam areas move one arm assembly to a maximum clamping force and, at the other limit of movement of the stop pin, the cam areas are in a reduced-force application. Trunnion blocks are pivotally retained in each arm, with one block having through threads and the other block having a smooth bore adapted to rotatably retain a socket-headed cap screw whose threaded portion is compatibly disposed in the threaded trunnion. Rotation of this screw causes jaw ends having pivoted clamp pads to be brought to and away from each other. The members of this clamp are of metal and the pivot pin and clamp pads may be made by a screw machine and then heat-treated.

    摘要: An automatic set-up system is provided for setting up on a pallet work to be machined by a flexible manufacturing system automatic machine tool. The pallet has a support plate and a jig plate which overlies the support plate on which the work is placed. The support plate, the jig plate and the work are sequentially conveyed by a convey unit on a setting table. The relative positions of the support plate and the jig plate, and of the jig plate and the work are usually held constant by the engagement of positioning recesses and positioning pins. Even if the position of the jig plate or the work conveyed by the convey unit deviates from a predetermined position, a float base and a support plate (the float base, the support plate, and the jig plate) are floated by means of air bearing pads. The horizontal movement of these components can be readily controlled, so that positioning pins can be easily fitted in the positioning recesses. A clamp is mounted on the jig plate by a setting robot; and the clamp is clamped by a nut runner so that the work is fixed to the pallet. The machined work and the pallet are automatically cleaned by a cleaner; and the clamp is removed from the work resting on the setting table. Finally, the work is removed from the pallet.

    摘要: An automatic set-up system is provided for setting up on a pallet work to be machined by a flexible manufacturing system automatic machine tool. The pallet has a support plate and a jig plate which overlies the support plate on which the work is placed. The step block has a generally right angled triangular configuration and has a saw-teeth portion on the inclined side. Each tooth of the saw-teeth portion is inclined upwards and outwards to positively support a complementary saw-teeth portion of the clamp arm. To provide a self-standing property to the step block, at least one permanent magnet and at least two yokes, interposing the permanent magnet between them and making contact with it, are received in a recess formed in a base surface of the step block, with the outer surfaces of the yokes being coplanar with the base surface.

    摘要: A rapid acting C-clamp is provided. A housing in the base of the C-clamp has a generally semi-cylindrical wall and an internal arcuate rib therein. The C-clamp has a threaded spindle extending through the housing, and a nut member in the housing is provided with a threadless bore through which the spindle extends for rapid advancement. The nut member also has a partially offset and partially threaded bore which is selectively engageable with the threaded spindle for threaded advancement of the spindle. The external surface of the nut is comprised of two semi-cylindrical portions overlapping so as to provide definite lines of demarcation between the portions. A friction member in the nut is resiliently pressed against the threads of the spindle to cause the nut to turn with the spindle in either direction. The nut cooperates with the arcuate rib, and depending on the direction of turning shifts the nut to cause the non-threaded bore to cooperate with the spindle for rapid advancement of the spindle, or to cause the partially threaded bore to cooperate with the threads of the spindle for threaded advancement of the spindle. The nut comprises a steel investment casting, while the frame of the C-clamp is forged steel, and the threaded spindle is copper coated for lubrication without the necessity of petroleum base lubricants.
