    摘要: An electric meter particularly characterized by a small number of moving parts and simplified assembly by virtue of fixed cooperating locating surfaces on the elements and sub-assemblies of the meter. A magnetic circuit including a yoke and magnet are constructed to snap into an insulating base in a predetermined position on the base. A coil assembly initially including integral elements for connection of pivot bearings or taut bands is accurately positioned for rotation on the supporting base by inserting the assembly into the base. Cooperating locating surfaces provide for accurate predetermined positioning of the axis of rotation of the coil relative to the magnetic circuit. Additional features of the meter construction reside in a direct gear drive between a zero adjust element and zero adjust knob mounted in a cover for the meter, a unique base, casing, and cover which snap together, a coil support form of unique construction and which includes motion limiting elements which limit the permissible extent of movement of the coil in the event of shock or impact to positions well within the elastic limit of the supports which mount the coil for rotation, a unique mode of terminating the end connections for the coil without the need for stripping insulation, a unique mounting arrangement for the assembled meter, a unique rear mounting scale plate which provides for easily replacing scale plates to meet the needs of the user of the meter, a meter movement of a single size adapted to be used with casings and scales of various sizes whereby the number of different parts required to form meters of different sizes is maintained at a minimum, a unique insulating material base with flexibility to permit expanding the base during assembly of the meter, and sub-assemblies, components, and elements which can be assembled in only one position and orientation to assure proper assembly of the meter.

    摘要: An illustrative embodiment of the invention shows a technique for accurately observing relative changes in strip thickness during sheet metal rolling operations. This is accomplished by measuring the apparent attenuations of two collimated beams of radiation. The prime radiation beam and the scanning beam, for instance, are tilted in opposite directions relative to the plane of the longitudinally moving metal strip in order to provide clearance for the radiation sources and associated detectors during traverse across the strip width. These tilted beams enable the relative change in strip thickness to be measured at essentially the same longitudinal position.

    摘要: A digital ohmmeter includes a current source having very high effective internal resistance to develop an analog signal across an unknown resistor and an analog-to-digital converter connected to the unknown resistor. The current source includes a differential operational amplifier with a conventional source of current connected to its integrating amplifier and to the inverting input and negative feedback from the output to the noninverting input. The output current is connected through a known resistance to the unknown resistor and to the non-inverting input of a second differential amplifier having capacitive feedback to its inverting output, forming an integrator. The integrator produces a dual-slope output under the control of a timer and level detector which also gates clock pulses to a counter to produce a count proportional to the resistance of the unknown. A reference current source is switched to the inverting input of the non-inverting input of the source amplifier.

    摘要: In a taut band suspension instrument in which each taut band extends between two convex support surfaces and the end portions of the taut band are secured to the respective supports by fused metal connections at points spaced radially from the axis defined by the band, the support surface at the end of the band farther from the rotor is provided with a shallow groove, the bottom of the groove being continuous and uninterrupted and having a width at least twice the width of the taut band, the support surface at the other end of the band being smooth and unbroken for the full width thereof. The combination of the two support surfaces allows the taut band to shift laterally when the instrument is under shock, yet assures that the outer end of the taut band will be properly oriented when installed and thereafter.

    摘要: The invention herein described was made in the course of or under a contract or subcontract thereunder with the Department of the Army. An illustrative embodiment of the invention is directed to method and apparatus for manufacturing microchannel devices. Typically, individual glass tubes are suspended vertically in a furnace. A vacuum is drawn within the furnace so that the inner surfaces of the tubes, exposed to atmospheric pressure, will not collapse during heating and drawing. At temperature, the bundle is drawn in order to elongate and reduce the bundle cross section by a ratio of about 50 to 1. The elongated bundle is cut into lengths that are stacked together within a tube of glass that has a higher melting point than the glass in the drawn lengths. The channels are once more sealed and the adjacent hexagonal lengths are subjected to a secondary fusion process prior to slicing into thin discs. To prevent the inner lengths from cracking during cooling, the inner surface of the tube is treated with a fusion inhibiting compound (e.g., boron nitride).
