A method for assembling at least two parts made of silicon carbide-based materials by non-reactive brazing is disclosed. The two parts are contacted with a non-reactive brazing composition. The assembly formed by the parts and the brazing composition is heated to a sufficient brazing temperature sufficient to melt the brazing composition. The parts and the brazing composition are cooled so that, after solidification of the brazing composition, a moderately refractory joint is formed. The non-reactive brazing composition is a binary alloy composed, in mass percentages, of about 46% to 99% silicon and 54% to 1% neodymium.

The ceramic assembly includes a ceramic layer to provide this electrical isolation. The ceramic layer has high thermal conductivity and high electrical resistivity. A top surface and a bottom surface of the ceramic layer are each bonded to a conductive layer, such as copper, using an intermediate joining material. A brazing process is performed to bond the ceramic layer to the conductive layer via a joining layer. The joining layer is a composite of the joining material, the ceramic layer, and the conductive layer. The top conductive layer and the joining layer are etched to form the electrically isolated conductive pads. The conductive layers are bonded to the ceramic layer using a bare ceramic approach or a metallized ceramic approach.

There is provided a low temperature co-fired ceramic substrate having a diffusion barrier layer to prevent diffusion occurring in a heterojunction during firing and a method of manufacturing the same. A low temperature co-fired ceramic substrate according to an aspect of the invention may include: a first ceramic layer formed of a material having a first dielectric constant; a second ceramic layer formed of a material having a second dielectric constant lower than the first dielectric constant; and a diffusion barrier layer interposed between the first ceramic layer and the second ceramic layer and formed of the first ceramic layer material, the second ceramic layer material, and a barium (Ba) compound, wherein inter-diffusion between the first ceramic layer material and the second ceramic layer material is prevented by using the diffusion barrier layer.

The present invention produces the following substrate and the following process for producing the substrate. A substrate obtained by filling through holes in a sintered product of aluminum nitride with an electrically conducting layer, wherein said sintered product of aluminum nitride has a thermal conductivity of not smaller than 190 W/mK, and the adhesion strength between said sintered product of aluminum nitride and said electrically conducting layer is not smaller than 5.0 kg/mm2. A process for producing the substrate comprises: filling the through holes in a molded article of aluminum nitride comprising an aluminum nitride powder, a sintering assistant and an organic binder, with an electrically conducting paste comprising 100 parts by weight of a refractory metal powder and 2 to 10 parts by weight of an aluminum nitride powder; dewaxing the molded article of aluminum nitride so that the content of residual carbon therein is within a range of from 800 to 3000 ppm; and firing the molded article of aluminum nitride at a temperature of from 1200 to 1700° C. and, then, at a temperature of from 1800 to 1950° C.
