The outermost perimeter portion has an outermost edge which is continuously contactable with the printing surface of the recording medium. The bonding force with respect to the ink on the outermost edge is less than the sum of a bonding force between the recording medium and the ink on a surface of the recording medium, and the cohesive force of the ink itself on the surface of the recording medium. As a result adherence of the ink to the contacting peripheral surface of the at least one rotatable member is prevented.

A cap in the non-printing region has two adjacent chambers and is moved between a contact position, in which the cap covers a discharge port forming surface of the print head, and a retracted position. One cap chamber seals the discharge port from the atmosphere and the other is connected to a suction pump to apply suction to a discharge port in the print head. In one embodiment the area of the cap in contact with the print head when the suction chamber is covering the discharge port forming surface is smaller than the area when the sealing chamber is covering it. Rotational movement of the lead screw can be used to move the cap and operate the suction pump.

A control circuit for a glow plug assembly serving as an engine preheating means is designed so as to effect a temperature control in harmony with the specified position established by selective operation of a key switch having three switching positions, i.e., OFF, ON and START positions. The control circuit is capable of effecting three modes of operation: One is that, when the key switch is switched from OFF position to ON position, the glow plug assembly is energized to rapidly effect a preheating of the engine, and is deenergized when the temperature thereof reaches a predetermined value; Second is that, when the key switch is switched from ON position to START position, the voltage smaller than that at the time of the preheating is applied to the glow plug assembly to effect a first heat retention having substantially the same temperature as that of the aforesaid predetermined value; Third is that, when the key switch is switched from START position to ON position, power is intermittently fed to the glow plug assembly to effect a second heat retention having the temperature lower than or closer to the aforesaid predetermined value.

The present invention provides a liquid application device, an inkjet recording apparatus and a recording apparatus, which are capable of performing an adequate application initial operation according to the length of waiting time and power-off time, as well as a method of controlling the liquid application device. In the present invention, information on an end time of the previous processing for collecting liquid is read from a nonvolatile memory, current time information indicating the current time is obtained, and information on a lapse of time from the end time of the previous collection to a start time of the current application. Thereafter, the number of preliminary rotations R of an application roller is decided based on the information on the lapse of time with reference to a look-up table. Sequentially, the application roller is rotated by the decided number of preliminary rotations R to perform preprocessing operation.
