In some aspects, an encoding device may determine a least reliable subset of information bits included in a set of information bits that includes a predefined active set of information bits to be encoded; may determine a codeword bit to be added to a codeword based at least in part on the least reliable subset of information bits, wherein adding the codeword bit to the codeword improves reliability of the least reliable subset of information bits; may add the codeword bit to the codeword; and may transmit the codeword. For example, information for different users may be mapped to different Polar code sub-channels. In some aspects, the mapping may be unbalanced in that different information is mapped to different sub-channels according to the quality (e.g., in terms of error probability) of the sub-channels and a criterion associated with the information. For example, control information for users that are experiencing the worst channel quality (e.g., in a wireless communication channel) may be mapped to the Polar code sub-channels that have the best quality.

Abstract: Various aspects of the disclosure relate to encoding information and decoding information. In some aspects, the disclosure relates to an encoder and a decoder for Polar codes with HARQ. If a first transmission of the encoder fails, information bits associated with a lower quality channel may be retransmitted. At the decoder, the resulting decoded retransmitted bits may be used to decode the first transmission by substituting the retransmitted bits for the original corresponding (low quality channel) bits. In some aspects, to decode the first transmission, soft-combining is applied to the decoded retransmitted bits and the original corresponding (low quality channel) bits. In some aspects, CRC bits for a first transmission may be split between a first subset of bits and a second subset of bits. In this case, the second subset of bits and the associated CRC bits may be used for a second transmission (e.g., a retransmission).

Abstract: Polar codes may be generated with a variable block length utilizing puncturing. Some puncturing schemes consider punctured bits as unknown bits, and set the log likelihood ratio (LLR) for those bits to zero; while other puncturing schemes consider punctured bits as known bits, and set the LLR for those bits to infinity. Each of these puncturing schemes has been observed to provide benefits over the other under different circumstances, especially corresponding to different coding rates or different signal to noise ratio (SNR). According to aspects of the present disclosure, both puncturing schemes are compared, and the puncturing scheme resulting in the better performance is utilized for transmission.

The described techniques provide for joint hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) feedback for sidelink transmissions and downlink transmissions. In some examples, a base station may transmit control signaling to a user equipment (UE) indicating a configuration for a joint HARQ codebook. The UE may receive a set of sidelink transmissions and a set of downlink transmissions, generate a joint HARQ codebook based on a downlink counter (e.g., a counter downlink assignment index) for the downlink transmissions and a sidelink counter (e.g., a counter sidelink assignment index) for the sidelink transmissions, where the downlink counter and the sidelink counter are jointly summed, and transmit feedback message to the base station for the downlink transmissions and the sidelink transmissions based on the joint HARQ codebook.
