Techniques are provided for detecting a coded signal in the presence of interference. In an embodiment, a primary transmitter corresponds to a desired transmitter, and one or more secondary transmitters correspond to interfering transmitters. Received symbols, which include interference and additive noise, are filtered to recover a set of original message bits. An estimate of the set of original message bits may be determined using an ordered successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoder that uses either a SIC detector or an AWGN-based detector, depending on the signal-to-interference ratio at a primary receiver.

Systems and methods are provided for determining a successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding ordering in a multiple input multiple output transmission (MIMO) system with retransmissions. A plurality of codewords is transmitted in a current transmission time. Some of the codewords may have been previously transmitted in previous transmission attempts according to a retransmission protocol. The plurality of codewords is received and an ordering metric is computed for a received codeword based on channels associated with multiple transmission attempts of the codeword. A decoding ordering of the codewords is determined based on the computed ordering metric. Performance parameters such as Packet Error Rate (PER), channel gain, and/or equalizer-output Signal-to-Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) may be used to evaluate a channel quality for each one of the transmission attempts of the codeword. The ordering metric may be updated recursively with each transmission attempt.

Techniques are provided for transmitting and receiving a mother code in an incremental redundancy hybrid automatic repeat-request protocol. Each bit position of the mother code may be mapped to an output symbol, and each output symbol may be mapped to an antenna for transmission. One or more transmissions of symbols contained in the output symbols may be performed, where each transmission may include puncturing the mother code by selecting one or more symbols from the of output symbols, and transmitting each symbol in the one or more symbols on an antenna corresponding to that symbol. The mother code may be decoded, in part, by determining combinable bits contained within a set of received symbols, and computing one or more log-likelihood ratio values corresponding to each symbol in the set of received symbols.
