The present invention is a method and apparatus for restoring or correcting digital images scanned in the presence of mechanical vibration, thereby improving the quality of the output image. In a document scanner, a linear sensor moving relative to a document placed upon a platen is scanned in a manner wherein fluctuations in the nominal scanning velocity are observed. Recognizing that the output of a single photosensor in the linear sensor array is proportional to the integrated irradiance received by the sensor as it scans through an exposure region, when vibratory motion of the sensor array is considered, the actual size of the exposure region is time-varying. The fluctuations or vibrations introduce artifacts such as brightness fluctuation and geometric warping which are eliminated or significantly reduced in accordance with the method of the present invention. Specifically, the instantaneous velocity of the linear sensor array is used to reconstruct an underlying piecewise linear model of the irradiance distribution. That reconstructed image is then resampled under ideal scanning conditions to produce the restored output.

Each of the N-1 filters is used to produce the slices, where N is the number of possible gray-scale levels desired in the output image. Once the slices are generated, the resulting binary image data therein is recombined, by adding or stacking, to produce the desired multiple-bit per pixel output.

A method and apparatus which eliminates beat like artifacts that occur when an RF signal is mixed with a pulsed signal of similar, but not identical, frequency to the RF signal. A controller for synchronizing the phase of a RF carrier signal to a video signal provides beat elimination in a high pixel rate laser printer. The video signal and RF carrier signal are multiplied and sent to an acousto-optic modulator for pulsing a uniform burst of energy in the form of a laser beam to a photoconductor. The controller may include a synchronous gateable crystal oscillator with logic such as TTL, CMOS, ECL or equivalent logic functions using discrete transistors, where the synchronous gateable crystal oscillator is frequency dependent upon a laser printing speed. Eliminating imaging defects such as variable pixel width and density provides a sharper, uniform pixel printout.

A document feeder is provided for presenting documents to the platen of a copier for copying with a vacuum belt platen transport system having document transporting belts movable under a substantially planar vaccum plenum backing. Also included is a vacuum system for applying a partial vacuum to a document sheet being transported by the movable belts over the platen. Show-through and show-around problems are reduced by optically mtching the belts and the plenum backing. In the preferred embodiment, the background surface is slightly roughend and made to be approximately 92% reflective to light during image exposure. The belts are composed of a urethane material which is approximately 16% transmissive but provides a 91% reflectance when moving along the plenum surface.

A gradient index lens array having improved stray light characteristics is enabled by coating the surfaces of the fibers comprising the array with a low transmittance, low viscosity material. The index of this material is matched to that of the fiber surface to prevent Fresnel reflection. The interstitial areas of the lens array comprises a light absorbing material. In another embodiment, stray light caused by light scattering at the end faces of the lens array is reduced by masking the end face with a mask having apertures overlying the fiber faces. The mask apertures have slightly smaller diameters to mask out the rough outer edge of the fibers.
