A method for removing mercury from water or hydrocarbon condensate is provided. The mercury-containing liquid is sprayed into a stripper having a packing therein to facilitate its contact with a stripping gas such as air or natrual gas. The stripped product is drawn from the bottom of the stripper. The stripping gas which carries the mercury from the stripper is passed over an active adsorbent to remove the mercury. The cleaned gas may be used or recycled.

A process for removing metal from a metal-containing hydrocarbon oil such as a heavy crude is disclosed which comprises:(a) contacting a hydrocarbon oil phase containing at least one metal selected from the group consisting of vanadium and nickel with an aqueous phase of dissolved phosphorous compound capable of forming a compound or a complex with said metal, said aqueous phase containing a substantial quantity of water relative to the amount of liquid hydrocarbon contacted therewith, said contacting resulting in the removal of a substantial quantity of the metal from the hydrocarbon oil phase to the aqueous phase; and,(b) separating the metal-containing aqueous phase from the demetalated hydrocarbon oil phase prior to subjecting the latter to downstream catalytic processing.

A process for enhancement of the cetane number of a diesel fuel which in one embodiment comprises:(1) treating a diesel oil with a nitrogenous treating agent in a nitrogen amount, equivalent on a 100% nitric acid basis, to about 10 weight percent or less of the diesel oil feed;(2) removing unreacted nitrogenous treating agent from the diesel oil of step (1) to produce a treated diesel oil, and;(3) blending the treated diesel oil of step (2) with an untreated diesel oil to produce a blended diesel fuel such that the added nitrogen content in the blended diesel fuel is(a) about 300 ppm or less of nitrogen added when the diesel oil treated in step (1) is obtained from virgin diesel oil stock; or(b) about 450 ppm or less of nitrogen added when the diesel oil treated in step (1) is obtained from hydrotreated diesel oil stock.

Organometallic compounds are separated from liquid hydrocarbons containing the same by contacting the liquid hydrocarbon with an activated charcoal having cupric chloride impregnated thereon. The contacting may be accomplished at any combination of temperature and pressure at which the hydrocarbon will remain liquid and at which all components used in the process will remain stable. The contacting may be accomplished in essentially any suitable fashion; however, contacting in a fixed bed of the activated charcoal is, generally, most convenient and effective. Impregnation of the activated charcoal is accomplished by contacting a suitable activated charcoal with a solution of the cupric chloride and thereafter at least partially drying the resulting mixture such that the solvent remaining therein is internally adsorbed in the activated charcoal pores. Generally, the presence of water in the impregnated activated carbon adsorbent will improve separation performance. This method of separation is particularly suited to the separation of organo lead compounds from gasoline.

AN INTEGRATED PROCESS FOR THE DESULFURIZATION OF CRUDE OIL OR SIMILAR VIRGIN HYDROCARBON FRACTIONS WHEREIN A DISPERSION OF METALLIC SODIUM IS EMPLOYED TO REACT WITH THE SULFUR CONTAMINANTS PRESENT WITHIN SUCH CRUDE OIL TO FORM A SODIUM SULFIDE PRECIPITATE ELIMINATED FROM THE TREATED CRUDE THROUGH CENTRIFUGATION. THE INTEGRATED SYSTEM IS PROVIDED BY REACTING THE SODIUM SULFIDE PREDIPITATE WITH HYDROCHLORIC ACID TO PRODUCE SODIUM CHLORIDE WHICH AFTER RECLAMATION CAN BE EMPLOYED THROUGH ELECTROLYSIS TO PROVIDE THE NECESSARY SODIUM FOR DESULFURIZATION OF THE CRUDE OIL.
