    Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for implementing blockchain technology in a data storage system. In certain embodiments, a data storage device may upload a copy of a file to a cloud server for storage, and receive a network link to the copy of the file. The data storage device may then provide file metadata and the network link to a distributed ledger blockchain system to create a blockchain entry.

    Abstract: A system includes a storage unit, a trusted time source, a key generation unit, and an encryption unit. The storage unit is configured to store data. The trusted time source provides a correct time responsive to a request. The key generation unit receives a time expiration associated with the data stored on the storage unit. The time expiration indicates when the data stored on the storage unit is to become inaccessible. The key generation unit further receives the correct time from the trusted time source and generates an encryption key based on the correct time and further based on the time expiration. The encryption unit is configured uses the encryption key to encrypt the data stored on the storage unit. A certificate that includes the time expiration and a decryption key associated with the encryption key is generated responsive to the data stored on the storage unit being encrypted.

    Abstract: In one aspect, a data storage device includes a disc, an arm, a head, a linear driver, and an elevator. The disc has a read/write surface defining an x-y plane. The arm has a head end that is movable relative to the disc. The head is configured to interact with the read/write surface. The linear driver is configured to move the arm along a substantially straight line in the x-y plane. The elevator is configured to move the arm in a z direction. In another aspect, rather than a linear driver, the data storage device includes a rotary actuator and a pivot actuator. The arm includes a first portion and a load beam. The rotary actuator is configured to move the first portion about a first pivot axis; the pivot actuator is configured to move the load beam about a second pivot axis relative to the first portion.

    Abstract: Technologies are described herein for or extending the lifespan of a solid-state drive by using worn-out MLC flash blocks in SLC mode to extend their useful life. Upon identifying a first storage location in the storage media of an SSD as a candidate for defecting, the first storage location is switched from a first programming mode to a second programming mode, where the second programming mode results in a lower storage density of storage locations than the first programming mode. In conjunction with switching the first storage location to the first programming mode, a second storage location in the storage media is switched from the second programming mode to the first programming mode to ensure that the total capacity of the storage media remains at or above the rated capacity.

    Abstract: Load balancing technology is used to distribute tasks requested of a data storage network across the connected storage nodes within the data storage network. Conventional load balancing technology is not proactive. Storage nodes within a data storage network may have different performance characteristics and/or current loads created by various demands on the storage nodes and connected servers. The proactive load balancers and corresponding load balancer agents disclosed herein are used to detect these variations in performance characteristics and/or current loads in the storage nodes and connected servers to inform decisions made by the proactive load balancer in distributing incoming access requests across the storage nodes and connected servers.

    Abstract: A distributed video management system that allows for monitoring a camera allocation parameter and dynamic reallocation of video cameras to available camera nodes in response to detecting a change in the allocation parameter including selectively dropping at least one camera from the system based on a priority of the camera. The change in allocation parameter may be due to a number of potential contexts including a change in availability of camera nodes, a change in the nature of the video data captured, a change in computational load, or other change that results in a change in allocation parameter. The disconnection or “dropping” of a camera may be temporary in response to an increase in computational load on the system. The use of priority values of the cameras may allow for sufficient camera coverage to be provided by the system while maintaining processing of video data from higher priority cameras.

    Abstract: A recording head for writing data on tracks of a data storage medium is provided. The recording head includes a writer having a write pole and a trailing shield. The write pole includes a pole tip configured to write on the tracks of the data storage medium. The recording head also includes first and second writing-assistance wires positioned between the pole tip and the trailing shield in a down-track direction to enable a writing-assistance current to be provided to produce an assist magnetic field that augments a write field produced by the write pole.
