    摘要: A porous high surface area composite electroconductive catalytic material, particularly as electrocatalyst for electrolysis electrodes, comprises a porous pre-formed matrix which is a catalytic mixed crystal material of at least one platinum group metal oxide and at least one valve metal oxide throughout which a subsequently-added additional catalyst preferably consisting of at least one platinum group metal and/or oxide is dispersed by chemideposition in an oxidizing or reducing atmosphere preferably followed by an annealing post heat treatment. The porous matrix may be ruthenium-titanium oxide and the additional catalyst advantageously comprises at least two oxides of ruthenium, rhodium, palladium and iridium, other combinations being possible.

    摘要: Transition metals of the groups IVB, VB and VIB or alloys thereof with Al are electrodeposited in a system of an electrolyte based on an aromatic hydrocarbon. The electrolyte is originally prepared by dissolving 0.02 to 0.2 moles of an inexpensive high oxidation state transition metal halide and 0.2 to 0.5 moles AlBr.sub.3 in 1.00 mole of the aromatic hydrocarbon. Additions of transition metal powders or Mg or Al particles lead to the pre-reduction of the high oxidation state transition metal ions to lower oxidation states. Alkali metal or Mg halides may be used to establish favorable bath conditions. The electrolysis is carried out with dissolvable metal anodes, to maintain the bath composition. The plating current density, bath composition and method of preparation are chosen to obtain the desired composition of the coatings.

    摘要: An electrode having a lead base and a catalyst is manufactured by (a) compressing titanium sponge particles so as to consolidate them to a coherent porous layer, (b) applying the catalyst to the titanium sponge particles, and (c) fixing the layer of consolidated sponge particles to the lead base. The catalyst is formed on the titanium sponge particles before or after their consolidation to a coherent layer. This layer may be produced and fixed to the base in a single compressing and fixing step combining (a) and (c). Oxygen is anodically evolved at a reduced, stable potential by means of this electrode, so that it can be usefully applied as an anode in processes for electrowinning metals from acid electrolytes.

    摘要: A lightweight cover provides heat insulation for a heated vessel such as a soaking pit. The cover can be readily assembled in a manner providing for ease of repair plus simplicity of maintenance. The cover has a pair of opposing frame members with ceramic fiber insulation positioned therebetween. The insulation is secured in movable engagement such as a draped and swinging engagement. In this mode, compression can be exerted against the insulation to most desirably reduce heat loss otherwise caused by heat induced ceramic fiber shrinkage. Moreover, with this structure a ceramic fiber heat seal can be achieved around edges of the soaking pit.

    摘要: A reticulate cathode, for use in an electrolytic cell for scavenging a metal from a solution containing ions of the metal, comprising an open cell electrically conductive foam which has been coated with conductive carbon particles. A cathode assembly comprises an electrically conductive support member to which the conductive foam is secured, the support also serving as the current conductor. The resistivity of the foam is less than 3000 ohm-cm, preferably in the range from about 40-1000 ohm-cm, and it has a pore size in the range from about 10 pores per inch (ppi) to about 100 ppi, and a void fraction in the range from about 0.5 to about 0.98. In its most preferred embodiment, the cathode is preplated with copper in an amount from about 0.5-20 g/ft.sup.2 of active area, sufficient to impart rigidity to the cathde and avoid using a support member.
