Abstract: Uplink high efficiency location of a user equipment (UE) includes initiating periodic or triggered location in the UE by a location server (LS) in a wireless network. The UE enters an idle state and monitors for triggering events. After detecting an event, the UE transmits an uplink positioning signal (UPS) to a base station, where the UPS encodes UPS data comprising a UE ID, an ID for the LS, an authentication code (AC) and location measurements. UPS transmission occurs in an uplink positioning occasion shared with other UEs. The location measurements may be ciphered but other UPS data is unciphered. The base station obtains additional location measurements and transfers the UPS data and the location measurements to the LS. The LS authenticates the UE ID using the AC, determines the UE location using the location measurements and transfers the location to an external client.

Abstract: Access, mobility management and regulatory services are supported for satellite access to a Fifth Generation (5G) core network (5GCN). Signaling including data and voice for radio cells supported by a satellite is transported between UEs and a core network via an earth station. When the satellite is transferred to a new earth station, the signaling can be transferred to the new earth station and possibly to a new base station. The UEs may remain with their current radio cells with a regenerative satellite or be assisted to remain with their current radio cells with a transparent satellite. The signaling transfer between the earth stations may occur at a Level 1 or Level 2. A modified handover procedure may be used with a regenerative satellite with split architecture when there is a change of base station.

Abstract: Access, mobility management and regulatory services are supported for satellite access to a Fifth Generation (5G) core network (5GCN). A location of a UE may be obtained by a UE or by a base station and used to determine a country in which the UE is located. The UE can then select a serving PLMN in the country of the UE which is accessible from a radio cell supported by a satellite. The UE can register with the serving PLMN and receive information from the serving PLMN concerning fixed cells and fixed tracking areas supported by the serving PLMN. If the UE attempt to register with a PLMN not in the country of the UE, a serving base station can reject the attempt and indicate the country to the UE.

Abstract: A Location Management Component (LMC) may be included in a gNB and connected to a gNB Central Unit (gNB-CU). The gNB-CU receives location related messages from any of (i) a UE via a gNB Distributed Units (gNB-DU), (ii) another gNB via an Xn interface, or (iii) a core network entity (e.g. AMF) via an NG interface. These messages can be transported in container messages (e.g., an RRC container for LPP messages sent to or received from a UE; an NGAP container for messages sent to or received from an AMF, or an XnAP container for messages sent to or received from another gNB). The gNB-CU removes the location related messages from the container messages and forwards them to an LMC using F1-AP container messages. Location related messages sent from an LMC to other entities are transported in a reverse manner through a gNB-CU using corresponding container messages.

Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for providing location services for user equipment (UE) devices in a radio access network (RAN) such as a Fifth Generation (5G) RAN. Location services may be supported by separate positioning domains that may include a Device to Device domain, a RAN domain and a core network (CN) domain. The RAN domain may include a location server function (LSF) that may support positioning services autonomously within the RAN or in collaboration with a D2D or CN domain. The CN domain may include a location server (LS) that may support control plane and/or user plane location. The RAN domain may enable high volume and low latency location service whereas the CN domain may enable high accuracy service and services for external clients.

Abstract: Methods and techniques are described for supporting location services for a user equipment (UE) in a Fifth Generation wireless network using a Location Management Function (LMF) based control plane (CP) location solution. The LMF serves as the main anchor point for location support instead of an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF). The LMF may be in either a serving Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) for a UE or in a Home PLMN for a roaming UE. The LMF may obtain location information for a UE via an AMF from a Next Generation Radio Access Network or the UE and may interact with a Gateway Mobile Location Center to receive location requests from and return location information to an external client. The LMF solution may be more efficient and require less implementation than an AMF based CP location solution.

Abstract: Methods and techniques are described for limiting a size of LTE Positioning Protocol (LPP) messages in a location session between a user equipment and location server. In one embodiment, a first device sends a first LPP message to a second device, indicating that the first device is capable of receiving segmented LPP messages. Subsequently, the first device receives a plurality of LPP message segments from the second device comprising one or more non-final LPP message segments and a final LPP message segment, where each LPP message segment includes a “non-final” or “final” indication. The first device stores the non-final LPP message segments and processes the LPP message segments after receiving the final LPP message segment. Prior to sending the first LPP message, the first device may receive an LPP message from the second device indicating the second device is capable of sending segmented LPP messages.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for positioning of a mobile device in a wireless network using directional positioning reference signals (PRS), also referred to as PRS beamforming. In an example method, a plurality of directional PRSs are generated for at least one cell for a base station, such that each of the plurality of directional PRSs comprises at least one signal characteristic and a direction of transmission, either or both of which may be distinct or unique. The plurality of directional PRSs is transmitted within the at least one cell, such that each of the plurality of directional PRSs is transmitted in the direction of transmission. A mobile device may acquire and measure at least one of the directional PRSs which may be identified using the associated signal characteristic. The measurement may be used to assist position methods such as OTDOA and ECID and to mitigate multipath.

Abstract: Techniques described herein are directed to increasing a quantity of location-related information broadcast by wireless nodes. In one embodiment, a user equipment (UE) sends a request to a wireless node for broadcast of an increased quantity of location-related information for a wireless access type and the wireless node broadcasts the increased quantity of location-related information using the wireless access type. The wireless node may transfer the request to other wireless nodes which may similarly broadcast the increased quantity of location-related information using the wireless access type. The UE may receive the increased quantity of location-related information using the wireless access type and may then obtain location information such as a location estimate for the UE. In some embodiments, the increased quantity of location-related information may comprise a positioning reference signal or location assistance data.
