A preferred filter media is provided. The media includes a fine fiber web secured to the surface of a coarse fiber support. A preferred filter media, comprising multiple layers of fine fiber media separated by coarse fiber support, is provided. Advantageous filter constructions result and are provided. Also according to the disclosure, methods for using such arrangements to filter are provided.
Abstract:
A fluid filter includes a cylindrical pleated filter media disposed around a central perforated support core or self-supporting. An outer support sleeve comprising a extruded nylon, diamond-shaped mesh is stretched across the pleated media, and elastically conforms to the pleat peaks to structurally retain the pleats of the pleat peaks in fixed relation to one another without mechanical or chemical connection to the pleats. Preferably, the support layer has a strand angle between 60 and 90 degrees, and a strand density sufficient to mark the element with appropriate identification indicia. End caps are disposed at opposite ends of the fluid filter. The cylindrical filter media is radially compressed through a conical tool into the outer sleeve. An inner support core or mandrel with a second conical tool is then forced into the cylindrical filter media to enlarge the media such that the outer sleeve elastically stretches and conforms to the pleat peaks.

A filter apparatus (10) which dissipates static charge from fluid flowing through the apparatus has a filter housing (12) enclosing a filter element (14). The filter element includes a tubular filter media assembly (15) which incorporates a conductive structure to draw off static charge in fluid passing through the media. The tubular filter media assembly comprises an outer steel mesh support layer (24); a first intermediate layer (25) of a filtration media; a second intermediate layer (26) of a carbon material, e.g., stainless steel, nickel or carbon fiber mesh, mat or matrix; and an inner steel mesh support layer (27). The filter media assembly is pleated and disposed around a central perforated conductive tube (16). The filter media is electrically connected at one or both ends through conductive adhesive or epoxy to at least one conductive end cap (20, 22). The conductive end cap has a central opening (33, 34), and receives a portion of the grounded filter housing (50, 52), for example, an inlet tube. A conductive elastomeric O-ring seal (48, 49) is disposed between the conductive end cap and the respective portion of the filter housing extending through the end cap opening. The O-ring seal electrically connects (grounds) the conductive end cap(s) to the respective housing portion to provide a flexible ground path for carrying away static charge in the fluid passing thorough the cartridge.
Abstract:
A removable and replaceable filter and filter holder is mounted within a mop cleaning bucket to receive dirt settling under gravity from the contained liquid with the dirt collecting in, and passing through so as to be trapped below, the filter and its holder. The holder is a rigid or substantially rigid perforated support structure spaced above and below the dirt receiving filter. In one embodiment, the holder is supported in the bucket in spaced relationship to the bottom of the bucket and protects the filter. The filter is a thin, sturdy, semi-rigid and floatable member with many holes so soiled water passes through and collects in the bottom of the bucket. The construction of the filter can be selected depending upon the material (grease sludge, dirt, oil, soot, or food particles) to be mopped up. The combination of the filter and filter holder blocks or dampens turbulence and prevents sediment from being stirred up in the bottom portion of the bucket. In the absence of the present invention, sediment could rise upwardly and mix with cleaner water above the filter and filter holder and which is reserved for mop cleaning and rinsing.
Abstract:
A filter is provided which combines a woven wire mesh over a supporting body. The supporting body is typically a metal perforated tube which provides fluid communication between the well bore and the production equipment string. The woven wire mesh acts as a filter to prevent the influx of sand particles, provides openings oriented at various angles relative to its surface, so that some area is available for fluid entry even when particulate matter is lodged on the surface above an opening, provides interior channels that allow fluid to travel from one location on the mesh surface to another location over an opening into the supporting body, and does not provide "straight-through" openings, thus forcing the fluid to make multiple turns to pass through the mesh, thereby dissipating the fluid's energy and increases the mesh's erosion resistance. When particulate matter accumulates on the mesh's surface, the resulting particle cake remains porous, heightening the filter's resistance to plugging.

A back-flushable filter cartridge includes a cylindrical exterior fluid-permeable filter media cage, a cylindrical interior fluid-permeable core element coaxially disposed within the filter media cage so as to establish therebetween an interior space, and longitudinally pleated filter media surrounding the core element and disposed in the interior space such that individual pleats thereof extend substantially radially outwardly from the core element. An annular space is established between outer longitudinal folds of the pleated filter media and the filter media cage. The pleated filter media is radially expandable into the established annular space to allow individual adjacent pleats of the pleated filter media to circumferentially separate from one another in response to fluid flowing in a radial direction from the core element toward the filter media cage.
Abstract:
The filter assembly includes a filter element having an end surface and an end cap connected to the end surface by spin welding. The end cap has an outer diameter that need be no larger than the outer diameter of the end surface of the filter element. Prior to spin welding, the end cap may have a surface with a sacrificial ridge extending from the surface. The end cap is spin welded to the end surface of the filter element by rotating the filter element and the end cap with respect to one another while contacting the sacrificial ridge with the end surface of the filter element, melting the sacrificial ridge by the contact with the filter element to form a molten plastic, and joining the surface of the end cap to the end surface of the filter element with the molten plastic. Also disclosed is a method of spin welding a filter pack to an end cap without a sacrificial ridge.
Abstract:
In critical filtration applications, filter cartridges are employed to replace ion exchange resin precoat filters to minimize the waste produced. The filter cartridges are backwashed with all gas and the liquid in the filter housing provides an active scouring effect as a result of the high levels of turbulence produced. The liquid, with entrained debris from the filter is minimized in volume.
Abstract:
A replacement filter cartridge assembly includes a filter cartridge element and a reusable supporting core assembly. The filter cartridge element is cylindrical in shape and has top and bottom end caps. Either the top end cap or the bottom end cap has an opening formed through its thickness which communicates with a central bore extending longitudinally through the filter cartridge element. The supporting core assembly includes a perforated tubular core and a sealing end cap mounted on one end of the core. The core is inserted through the top or bottom end cap opening and into the central bore of the filter cartridge element. The sealing end cap rests against either the top or bottom end cap of the filter cartridge element, while the other end of the tubular core contacts the inner side of the opposite end cap of the cartridge element. The supporting core is removable from the filter cartridge element when the filter cartridge needs to be replaced or cleaned, and may be reused on a clean filter cartridge element.

A filter cartridge for use in a fluid filtering system, constructed to induce rotational flow in the unfiltered fluid, includes a pleated filter sleeve in which the individual sleeves are slanted relative to the sleeve circumference in a direction opposite to the direction of the rotational flow fluid. The slanted pleats can be constructed by creasing a sheet of filter media at alternatingly shorter and longer widths to form pleats having relatively shorter front legs and relatively longer back legs. The shorter front legs bias the pleats in the counter-rotational direction. Apparatus for manufacturing the pleated sleeve includes a pleater roll having pleater wires spaced to form the alternatingly shorter and longer pleat widths.
