In a rotary filter of the type in which a plurality of hollow spaced leaves 20 are mounted on a hollow shaft 18 rotatably mounted within a housing containing slurry under super atmospheric pressure, the filter cake formed on the leaves is scraped off by blades 32 and 32' and fed into shoot 31 extending upwardly from a tubular shaft 28 through which the cake is moved to the exterior of the casing. The blades 32 and 32' are hinged to the top of the shoots and are provided with links 37' and 40 which have studs 38 and 41 which ride in slots 39 in a bar 34 reciprocally mounted in the housing, so enabling the blades to be moved into and out of contact with the filter leaves. The discharge end of the shaft 28 is normally closed by a member 51 A sitting on a seat member 52A balanced thereon by the pressure within the casing acting on one side through line 59 and on the other side through shaft 28 but opens when extra pressure builds up within the shaft 28 due to the cake and causes the member 51 to move off seat 52. A screw conveyor 46 may be provided within the shaft 28 with blades of substantially the same diameter as that of the interior of shaft 28 so that air pressure does not escape.
