    摘要: A rotator assembly for a poppet valve employed in an internal combustion engine employs a garter spring mounted in a circular groove concentric with the valve axis. A rotator plate rests on the garter spring so that the plate turns incrementally through a small arc each time the valve completes its opening and closing cycle. Concentric coil compression springs resist opening movement of the poppet valve and both of these springs are supported by a valve retainer which rests on the rotator plate. The lower ends of both springs are supported at the same elevation and the springs are centralized by means of integral fingers struck from the retainer ring to hold one or both springs in central position.

    摘要: A valve is reciprocable between open and closed positions along a longitudinal axis and is rotatable about the axis by a rotator mechanism. The rotator mechanism includes first and second parts movable axially and rotatably relative to one another along and about the longitudinal axis. Circumferentially shiftable means is located between the first and second parts for imparting relative rotation between the parts during relative axial movement therebetween. A Belleville spring washer is located between the shiftable parts. The inner periphery of the spring washer bears on one of the parts and the outer periphery of the spring washer bears against the other part. The central portion of the spring washer bears against the shiftable means. The shiftable means is preferably either a ball or garter spring having a curved outer peripheral surface. The spring washer has a depression formed therein to provide a concave surface in contact with the curved outer peripheral surface of the shiftable means. The spring washer is of substantially uniform thickness throughout its extent.

    摘要: A device for rotating a reciprocating valve executing alternating opening and closing strokes has an overrunning clutch coupled to the valve stem; a control lever; a first articulation connecting the control lever to the overrunning clutch; and a second articulation supporting the control lever at a distance from the overrunning clutch. The control lever is arranged to impart to the overrunning clutch a torque derived from the reciprocating motion of the valve. The overrunning clutch transmits the torque to the stem for effecting rotation thereof about the stem axis solely during the closing strokes. The second articulation is situated at a predetermined fixed location selected such that a line connecting the articulations defines a first angle with the valve stem axis at the end of each closing stroke and a second angle at the end of each opening stroke. The first angle is acute and the second angle is at the most 90.degree. and is greater than the first angle.

    摘要: An arrangement for rotating a valve of a reciprocating internal combustion engine relative to the valve seat in addition to the normal reciprocating motion of the valve, whereby to more evenly distribute wear on the valve and on the valve seat, and, in the case of an exhaust valve, to more uniformly distribute heating of the valve and thus avoid or minimize thermal distortion of the exhaust valve. The rotation of the valve is obtained by use of the well known principle in accordance with which the central longitudinal axis of the valve lifter is offset from the central plane (as measured in the lengthwise dimension of the cam shaft) of the rotating cam which imparts reciprocatory movement to the valve lifter and thus to the valve. The offset relation just described imparts a rotary movement to the valve lifter which, in turn, imparts a rotary movement to the valve during the period of cam rotation when the valve is lifted off the valve seat. In applicant's construction, two aligned bores preferably of equal diameter are provided in the cylinder block or engine body, the two bores lying on a common axis X-X with each other and with the central plane of the cam which actuates the valve lifter. The first or upper bore in the cylinder block receives a guide bushing having a valve-stem-receiving bore which is concentric and coaxial with the internal diameter of its corresponding cylinder block bore and thus lies on the axis X-X. The second or lower bore in the cylinder block receives a second guide bushing having a valve-lifter-stem-receiving bore lying on an axis Y-Y which is eccentric relative to internal diameter of its corresponding cylinder block bore. Thus the valve lifter whose stem is received by the bore of the second guide bushing lies on an axis Y-Y which is eccentric relative to the axis X-X which passes through the central plane of the cam. This eccentric relation of the axis of the valve lifter relative to the central plane of the cam causes rotation of the cam to impart a rotary motion to the valve lifter, which, in turn, imparts a rotary movement to the valve during the period when the valve is off the valve seat. Applicant's construction has the advantage that the two aligned preferably equal diameter bores in the cylinder block or engine body can be made by relatively simple and inexpensive machining operations, with the eccentric relation of the valve lifter to the cam being provided by a guide bushing having an eccentric bore therein, thereby eliminating the need for drilling an eccentric bore in the cylinder block for receiving the stem of the valve lifter.

    摘要: The cam for the exhaust valve has a small lobe that momentarily interrupts closing motion of the valve just before it seats, so that the valve slips rotationally relative to its spring under rotational inertia built up during the preceding part of closing motion and induced by rotation of the moving end of the spring. The profiled cam surface is recessed in the neighborhood of said lobe to engage the tappet only at one side of its axis and thus encourage rotation.
