A wireless multi-cell communication system, such as a time division duplex (TDD) system, includes at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) and a plurality of base stations which broadcast beacon signals into a plurality of sectors of a cell of the system. Beacon channel acquisition performance is enhanced by reducing beacon channel mutual interference. Each of the base stations broadcast a beacon signal into at least one of the cell sectors in a first time slot at least another one of the cell sectors in a second time slot different from the first time slot. The WTRU determines, at a particular position, which one of the beacon signals has the best signal quality, acquires the one beacon signal and establishes communications via the base station that generated the one beacon signal having the best signal quality.

An improved method of network management, particularly in the context of standards IEEE802.11 and IEEE802.11k, through two new MAC measurements, with attendant advantages. The two new measurements include WTRU uplink traffic loading measurement, and an AP service loading measurement and is generally applicable at least to layers 1 and 2 as applied to a least 802.11k in the context of OFDM and CDMA 2000 systems, but is applicable to other scenarios as well. A Method for determining and advertising congestion is also provided for a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) system. The present invention also introduces a method for managing congestion when congestion is detected. This aspect of the present invention applies primarily to wireless systems that use the Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) mechanism. The methods are advantageously implemented in selectively configured WTRUs of various forms.

The system includes at least one Node-B and at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). The WTRU communicates with the Node-B via a common control channel, the UL channel and the DL channel. The message includes an indication of whether the message is intended for assigning radio resources to the UL channel or the DL channel. A method and wireless multi-cell communication system for providing high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) services. The system includes a radio network controller (RNC) in communication with a plurality of base stations. The RNC sends a control signal to at least one base station having a plurality of timeslots, e.g., in a time division duplex (TDD) system and/or frames including transmission timing intervals (TTIs), e.g., in a frequency division duplex (FDD) system assigned thereto for the establishment of HSDPA channels. The control signal indicates a maximum allowed HSDPA transmit power for each of the timeslots and/or TTIs. The base station sends a feedback signal to the RNC indicating the results of measurements of the power of the transmitted HSDPA timeslots and/or TTIs during a predetermined time period.

A sub-set of the M secondary synchronization codes (SSC) including K secondary synchronization codes (SSC) is allocated to the base station.

A method of estimating qualities of a transmission or telecommunications channel involves using a pair of complementary sequences s(n) and g(n), with n=0, 1, . . . , N−1, which have the property that the sum of their auto-correlations is a perfect Dirac function (that is, &PHgr;s,s(n)+&PHgr;g,g(n)=k·&dgr;(n)). A composite signal made up of two complementary sequences s(n) and g(n) is used, after having time multiplexed these two sequences in such a way as to exploit the property &PHgr;s,s(n)=&PHgr;g,g(n)=k·&dgr;(n). The composite signal is made up of two sequences which are concatenated with, between them, a guard interval of a duration greater than or equal to the length of the impulse response of the channel to be estimated.
