摘要: This invention is a fast contention resolution unit for resolving contention among a plurality of adapters for access to a communications network. Included in the fast contention resolution unit is an apparatus for transmitting a token about a ring from one cell to another cell bypassing intermediate cells whose associated adapters do not have a request to gain access to the communications network.

摘要: A system, computer readable medium and a method for encrypting a file, the method may include retrieving the file from a storage service; segmenting the file into multiple file segments; calculating a file segment signature for each of the multiple file segments to provide multiple file segment signatures; encrypting each of the multiple file segments to provide multiple encrypted file segments by using encryption keys that are in response to the multiple file segment signatures; wherein the multiple encrypted file segments form an encrypted file; and sending the multiple encrypted file segments to the storage service.

摘要: A method for testing a communication network includes transmitting at least one unidirectional flow over a path through the network, and measuring arrival characteristics of the least one unidirectional flow at a receiving end of the path. The arrival characteristics include at least one of a packet throughput characteristic, a packet delay characteristic, a packet loss characteristic, a packet jitter characteristic and a packet misordering characteristic. A bidirectional flow is transmitted over the path from both ends of the path simultaneously, and the arrival characteristics of the bidirectional flow are measured at least at one of the ends. The arrival characteristics of the unidirectional and bidirectional flows are compared in order to detect a fault in the path.

摘要: The invention is a method and apparatus for determining an approximate network distance using one or more reference points. In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, the method comprises the steps of selecting at least one reference point positioned along a path between first and second points of a network, generating first distance metric information associated with at least one path associating a first point and the at least one reference point, generating second distance metric information associated with at least one path associating a second point and the at least one reference point, and determining a total approximate distance between the first point and the second point along one or more paths based on the first and second distance metric information. In one or more embodiments, the second distance metric information is published to one or more servers providing domain name server mapping information and the second distance metric information is provided to the first point along with requested mapping information. In one or more embodiments, total approximate distance information between a client and multiple servers providing a desired service is determined and a server associated with a shortest total approximate distance is selected from which to obtain the service.

摘要: An efficient, cost effective method and apparatus for performing resource allocation of available bit rate (ABR) virtual circuit (VC) in an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network includes an explicit rate switch process performed at at least one switch of an ABR VC. The process provides a fast and more accurate computation of the number of active VCs in an ATM network. Furthermore, the fair share allocation is calculated at the switch in a way that is efficient and lends itself easily to implementation in hardware. For example, in one embodiment, the fair share is implemented using a series of counters and registers controlled by a state machine. This simple hardware implementation enables fast convergence to a current final state so that timely accurate resource utilization and allocation to the ABR VCs can be determined.
