Abstract: An unmanned high altitude aircraft operating above 15 km with transmitting and/or receiving antennas, enclosed or more than half enclosed on a projected area basis normal to the plane of the antenna(s), in a wing structure where the chord length of the wing section enclosing the phased arrays or horn antennas is at least 30 percent greater than the mean wing chord length, and the wing surface adjacent to the antenna(s) in the path of the electromagnetic radiation being received or transmitted by the antenna(s) is substantially composed of material relatively transparent to this radiation.

Abstract: A method for maintaining a connection of mobile user equipment to a core network, and a communication network are disclosed. The method comprises the steps of providing a multi-channel communication link between a user equipment at a first location and a plurality of aerial vehicles, determining that the user equipment is moving whereby a loss of connectivity via the multi-channel communication link may occur, and subsequently, via a handover step, transferring communication between the user equipment and a core network from communication via the multi-channel communication link to communication via a single channel communication link provided by a respective aerial vehicle.

Abstract: A method for correcting frequency and/or phase in a communication link; a communication network; and a multiplexing and phase compensation unit are disclosed. The method for correcting frequency and/or phase in a communication link comprises receiving at least one reference transmission communicated via a wireless communication link; providing at least one identified characteristic by identifying at least one characteristic of the reference transmission; comparing said identified characteristic with at least one expected characteristic; and correcting a shift in frequency and/or phase of at least one communication signal communicated via the communication link based on a difference between the identified characteristic and the expected characteristic.

Abstract: A process for cooperative aerial inter-antenna beamforming for communication between (a) multiple moving platforms, each platform having an aerial antenna mounted thereon, such that the aerial antennas have variable positions and orientation over time, and (b) at least two ground based antennas; the process involving transmitting data relating to the positions of the aerial antennas to a processing system, the processing system calculating and transmitting beamforming instructions to the ground based antennas, the ground based antennas thereby transmitting or receiving respective component signals for each aerial antenna, the component signals for each aerial antenna received or transmitted by the ground based antennas having essentially the same information content but differing in their phase and usually amplitude, so as to form a cooperative beam from the cooperative sum of the signals between the ground based antennas and the at least two aerial antennas.
