Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for operating an internal combustion engine at a firing fraction that is less than a value of 1.0, wherein one or more cylinders of the internal combustion engine are not designated to be fired, determining a smoothing event time period where a particular one of the cylinders that have not been designated to be fired is either skipped or recharged, selecting a periodic disruptive waveform to approximate that is related to a skip or recharge event that is part of the smoothing event time period, determining a first harmonic sinusoid from a group of harmonic sinusoids that reduces the error between an approximated waveform and the disruptive waveform, determining a timeframe for utilizing the first harmonic, and actuating an additional motor to initiate a supplemental quantity of torque during the smoothing event time period based on the disruption quantity of torque.

Abstract: Engine controllers and methods are described that facilitate skip fire control of an internal combustion engine. An engine controller determines a skip fire firing fraction and (as appropriate) associated engine settings that are suitable for delivering a requested output. The engine controller selects an operational firing fraction from a set of available firing fractions. A firing controller then directs cylinder firings in a skip fire manner that delivers the selected operational firing fraction. The firing controller includes an accumulator that helps smooth transitions between different firing fractions.

Abstract: A variety of engine controllers and methods are described for controlling engines operating in a cylinder output level modulation mode. In one aspect transitions between different effective firing fractions are managed by gradually ramping an effective firing density. In another, when an engine transitions to a multi-level skip fire firing density that has more than one possible high/low/skip sequence, the phase of the high/low pattern is set relative to the phase of the firing pattern to ensure that a preferred high/low/skip sequence is generated. In another aspect, rapid large torque changes can be implemented in part by immediately changing the operational high/low fraction in response to a command to increase or reduce the desired engine torque.
