    摘要: A marine muffler adapted with an internally tunable sound suppression structure is adaptable to different configurations thereby allowing for structural adjustments to optimize sound suppression and minimize backpressure for particular engine and exhaust conditions. A muffler housing defines an interior volume and includes an exhaust inlet and outlet. The outlet has a reduced diameter as compared with the inlet such that the exhaust gas accelerates through the muffler. An inclined baffle partitions the interior volume into a lower chamber in communication with the exhaust inlet and an upper chamber in communication with the exhaust outlet. Exhaust ducts attached to each side wall penetrate the baffle thereby placing the upper and lower chambers in fluid communication. A corrugated partition divides each exhaust duct into a plurality of non circular conduits. The muffler may be tuned by selectively capping one or more conduit outlets.

    摘要: A water drop muffler for use in a marine exhaust system to silence exhaust noise while separating entrained water from exhaust gas using hydro-dynamic centrifugal separation principles enhanced by turbulent flow. A muffler housing has a top and a bottom, and defines an internal volume bounded by a generally vertically disposed cylindrical inner surface formed about a longitudinal axis. A generally tubular exhaust inlet is disposed in generally tangential relation with the cylindrical inner housing surface for receiving a mixture of exhaust gas and entrained cooling water. A variable geometry flow channel efficiently transitions the flow for discharge through a vertically elongate opening disposed along the length of the housing inner surface thereby creating vortex flow within the housing to maximize the generation of centrifugal forces. The vortex flow formed within the housing causes the relatively heavy water droplets and water vapor (i.e. steam) to be drawn away from the housing axis toward the cylindrical inner surface. In addition, turbulent boundary layer flow along the surfaces of the variable geometry flow forming channel and the other housing surfaces functions to more efficiently draw entrained water droplets and steam into contact with various surfaces within the housing thereby causing water to coalesce along the inner housing surfaces.

    摘要: A water jacketed exhaust component includes an exhaust pipe having a radially inwardly tapered tail end, a water jacket disposed in surrounding relation with the exhaust pipe, and a generally V-shaped spray ring. The spray ring includes a first and second set of apertures that create diverging streams of cooling water. A first set of apertures creates an annularly disposed series of streams that are directed downstream and radially inward. These streams are generally directed toward the outer surface of the exhaust pipe structure which extends downstream of the spray ring. A second set of apertures creates an annularly disposed series of streams that are directed downstream and radially outward. These streams are generally directed toward the inner surface of the water jacket structure extending downstream of the spray ring. By providing a water jacketed exhaust component with a spray ring that creates diverging streams of cooling water, the present invention provides a water jacketed marine exhaust component that provides improved exhaust gas cooling over a wider range of engine operating conditions. An alternate embodiment includes a V-shaped spray ring configured to create converging streams of cooling water.

    摘要: A water jacketed exhaust pipe comprising an inner liner, an outer shell, and a spray ring. The inner liner includes an internally tapered section which clips the turbulence that occurs along the inner walls of the liner. As a result, fluid expelled from the spray ring will not migrate into the inner liner where it can cause severe corrosion. The inner liner is longer than the outer shell. The outer liner includes an internally tapered section which scatters the stream of water expelled from the spray ring and further redirects water onto the inner liner and into the center of the exhaust path. The redirected water particles are easily vaporized and in the process, extract a significant amount of heat from the exhaust system.
