    Abstract: A container sorting system can receive a container on a conveyance surface and convey the container in a conveyance direction. A linear induction motor positioned relative to the conveyance surface (e.g., below) can generate a magnetic field that causes movement of a shoe coupled to the conveyance surface. The shoe can move relative to the conveyance surface and engage the container to change the movement direction of the container. The movement direction of the container can be changed to move the container off of the conveyance surface.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, an inventory storage module has first and second conveyor segments that are vertically spaced from one another and third and fourth conveyor segments that connect the first and second conveyor segments to define a movement path that is elongate along a longitudinal direction. The module has a plurality of container carriers that are supported by the first to fourth conveyor segments. Each container carrier supports at least one inventory storage container that can support at least one inventory item therein. The module has at least one movement system that can push the container carriers along the first and second conveyor segments along the longitudinal direction between the first and second module ends. The storage module can translate inventory storage containers around the movement path until a desired one of the inventory storage containers is presented at one of the first and second module ends.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, an actuator has a roller, a helical track, and at least one track follower. The roller has a cylindrical body that has a first end, a second end that is offset from the first end along a central axis, and a cylindrical outer surface that extends from the first end to the second end. The helical track is disposed around the cylindrical outer surface in a helical pattern. The at least one track follower can be attached to a load, and rides along the helical track when the roller is rotated about the central axis so as to translate the load along an axial direction that is substantially parallel to the central axis. In some embodiments, the roller has an internal motor that is disposed within the cylindrical body.

    Abstract: Techniques and safety devices are described for extinguishing fires within an inventory management system. A plurality of fire extinguishing devices for a plurality of containers in an inventory management system is monitored. Upon determining that a fire condition is occurring within the inventory management system, a positional information data store is queried to determine a current position of a first container within the inventory management system. Two or more containers within the inventory management system that are in close proximity to the first container are identified and one or more wireless signals are transmitted to two or more fire extinguishing devices of the plurality of fire extinguishing devices that are contained within the two or more containers, to activate the two or more first extinguishing devices. The plurality of containers is scanned using an infrared scanning device to determine whether all fire conditions within the inventory management system are extinguished.
