Abstract: An optical coupling device includes a first waveguide layer, including a first semiconductor material, which is disposed over a dielectric substrate layer. A dielectric intermediate layer overlies the first waveguide layer. A second waveguide layer, which includes a different, second semiconductor material, is disposed over the dielectric intermediate layer and is patterned to define a waveguide. A first grating in the second waveguide layer diffracts light of a given wavelength from the waveguide into a specified diffraction order at a given coupling angle, whereby a first fraction of the light propagates out of the device while a second fraction of the light is diffracted into the intermediate dielectric layer in a conjugate diffraction order. A second grating in the first waveguide layer diffracts the second fraction of the light into a second diffraction order, propagating out of the device at the given coupling angle.

Abstract: An optical sensing device includes a planar substrate and an array of optical transceivers disposed on the planar substrate. Each optical transceiver includes a photodetector, at least one turning mirror having a reflective surface disposed diagonally relative to the substrate, and multiple waveguides disposed parallel to the substrate. The waveguides include a transmit waveguide, which is coupled to convey outgoing light from a coherent light source to the at least one turning mirror for output from the optical transceiver, and a receive waveguide, which is coupled to receive incoming light reflected by the at least one turning mirror and to convey the incoming light to the photodetector.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure involve projecting an interactive scene onto a surface from a projecting object. In one particular embodiment, the interactive scene is projected from a vehicle and may be utilized by the vehicle to provide a scene or image that a user may interact with through various gestures detected by the system. In addition, the interactive scene may be customized to one or more preferences determined by the system, such as user preferences, system preferences, or preferences obtained through feedback from similar systems. Based on one or more user inputs (such as user gestures received at the system), the projected scene may be altered or new scenes may be projected. In addition, control over some aspects of the vehicle (such as unlocking of doors, starting of the motor, etc.) may be controlled through the interactive scene and the detected gestures of the users.

Abstract: A test system may be used to measure biological samples and other samples. Samples may be placed on a test substrate such as a test slide or other transparent substrate. The substrate may have patches of reactant-coated gold nanorods or other nanostructures that exhibit plasmonic resonances. An accessory may be removably coupled to a portable electronic device such as a cellular telephone. The accessory may have a lens and a light source that emits light into an edge of the test slide. The light may scatter from the nanostructures in a perpendicular direction towards a camera in the portable electronic device so that the portable electronic device can gather images of the illuminated substrate and measure spectral shifts associated with reactions between the samples and the reactant, thereby helping to analyze the composition of the samples.

Abstract: Some embodiments provide a system which includes a layered transparent surface which includes a UV absorption layer configured to be located between a user environment and an external environment and a phosphor layer configured to be located between the user environment and the UV absorption layer. An image projection system can project an ultraviolet image upon the phosphor layer, which can generate a visual image based on a fluorescent reaction of the phosphor layer to the ultraviolet image which can be perceived by a user in the user environment. The image projection system can include a plurality of image projection systems which can project separate images on separate projection fields, which can result in the phosphor layer generating an image which can be perceived by a user, in the user environment, as a stereoscopic image.
