The present invention provides an intelligent, modular multimedia computer management system for coupling a series of remote computers to one or more user workstations to allow each user workstation to selectively access and control one or more remote computers. The computer management system incorporates a centralized switching system that receives keyboard, cursor control device, audio, and auxiliary peripheral device signals from the user workstation and transmits and applies the signals to the remote computer in the same manner as if the keyboard, cursor control device, audio input source, or auxiliary peripheral device of the user workstation were directly coupled to the remote computer. Disclosed is a method and apparatus for transmitting, multicasting, or broadcasting video signals from a video source to one or more remotely located computers and/or video clients. Specifically, the disclosed method and apparatus effectively digitizes and compresses received video signals such that they may be transmitted with other digitized signals directly or via a network, such as the Internet, to a multitude of computers and/or independent video display devices. The video transmission system is also capable of receiving video signals from a non-networked computer that does not require any hardware or software modifications to be compatible with the video transmission system. The disclosed video transmission system operates independently (i.e., does not require a service provider) and is capable of recording video transmissions.

Disclosed is a system and method for correcting the separation of synchronized video signals resulting from transmission over wires of different lengths. Preferably, circuitry is used to inject a signal pulse along the red, green, and blue video signal transmission lines through a selectable delay circuit to a skew compensation circuit located at a user workstation. The skew compensation circuit sums the amplitudes of the received signal pulses and compares the result to a reference amplitude. This is repeated for each possible delay combination of the selectable delay circuits. The skew compensation circuit then determines the delay combination which produces a summed amplitude most closely matching the reference amplitude. This delay combination is implemented in the selectable delay circuits and normal video transmission is allowed to resume such that the red, green, and blue components of the video signal arrive at the video monitor at approximately the same time.
