Abstract: A multi-phase electric machine having plurality of windings are mounted on the stator core that define a plurality of phases wherein, for each phase, the windings include at least two parallel windings, each winding comprising a pair of continuous wires which are connected in series. For each pole, the parallel windings fill one or more central slots and two outer slots. Each winding fills each central slot twice the number of times that the winding fills each outer slot to thereby define a slot fill ratio of 2:1 between central slots and outer slots and wherein each wire of the wire pair forming a winding fills the slots in a ratio that differs from the slot fill ratio. Phase shift end loops shift the windings from one outer slot to the other outer slot. Position change end loops alter the relative positions of the parallel windings.

Abstract: An alternator includes an external ignition protection system including a shaft rotatable about an axis. The shaft includes a slip ring end. A slip ring support is mounted at the slip ring end of the shaft. A slip ring cover is mounted to the shaft. The slip ring cover defines a slip ring cavity. A first slip ring end housing supports the slip ring cover. The first slip ring end housing includes a first plurality of openings. A second slip ring end housing is arranged axially outwardly of the slip ring end. The second slip ring end housing includes a second plurality of openings. The first slip ring end housing, slip ring cover and the second slip ring end housing define a labyrinth flow path that provides an air flow through the slip ring cavity and prevents passage of ignition inducing elements from the alternator.

Abstract: A multi-phase electric machine having plurality of windings are mounted on the stator core and define a plurality of phases with each phase having at least two parallel windings. A standard pitch is defined between each pole of each phase, the pitch being a common circumferential spacing between corresponding slots of each pole. Each of the windings has a position change end loop at the same location, wherein the position change end loops define a non-standard pitch to thereby change the relative positions of the parallel windings in the slots. At each set of such position change end loops, the windings defining a greater pitch extend over the windings defining a lesser pitch.
