A tracking servo for a disk player controls the movement of a playback head between prerecorded magnetic tracks carried by a magnetic disk. A feedback signal is provided from a timing wheel attached to a cam and gear configuration that connects a dc servomotor to the head. The servo separates the track-to-track movement into two components: one component occurring while the dc motor is energized and another occurring while the dc motor is coasting to a stop, presumably opposite the desired track. The first component of movement continues until the feedback signal corresponds to an intermediate value, which is predetermined for the first movement. At this point the dc motor is turned off but the timing wheel continues to increment the feedback signal as the motor coasts. Should the head be misaligned with respect to the track after the dc motor stops, the final value of the feedback signal is used to modify the intermediate value for the next track-to-track movement. In this way irregularities due to coasting will not accumulate and affect future track-to-track movement.

An automated storage and retrieval system stores containers, typically containing biological or chemical samples, at ultra-low temperatures, i.e., from about −50° C. to about −90° C., preferably about −80° C. under normal operating conditions. Dry gas air flows are used to reduce moisture and the consequential frost within the freezer compartment. A custom insulated door is provided with an access module and a tube picking compartment as well as servo motors for controlling a robot within the ultra-low temperature freezer compartment. The robot automatically places sample storage containers in stationary storage racks within the freezer compartment. Magnetic couplings are used to transmit mechanical power from outside of the freezer compartment to the robot inside of the freezer compartment. The robot has a simplified mechanical configuration. The custom door can be readily attached to standard freezer bodies.

Each track is dedicated to the writing and reading of a predetermined set of parameters relating to the corresponding frame, for easy access by a particular one of the various users. An operator-selected exposure is provided for the picture frame which differs from the nominal exposure by a known under- or over-exposure. A method of operating a photographic printing system is provided, responsive to the recorded data, for marking a photographic print to indicate to an observer the under- or over-exposure of the negative. A method of operating a transparency processing system is provided wherein, responsive to the recorded data, the slide mount is marked with the under- or over-exposure.

A thermal printer and method for operating a thermal printer are provided. The thermal printer has a receiver medium path leading past a print nip between a print head and platen. A processor causes an urge roller to move the receiver medium in the forward direction until a trailing edge of the receiver medium is moved to a point where reverse movement of the receiver medium causes the receiver medium to located against a stop surface. The processor then enables the receiver medium to travel in the reverse direction to engage the stop surface wherein the receiver medium path guides the receiver medium along a path of known length from the stop surface to a print line at the print nip.
