    摘要: A compensation element (317) in a feedforward line in a dual stage control system for a data storage system compensates for the undesired transient motion of a first positioning element (i.e., a coarse actuator). The compensation element is a transfer function that is applied from the first positioning element's control signal (Uv) to a second positioning elements's (306) (i.e., microactuator's) input. The transfer function is defined as formula (I) where ^Vnom (z) is a transfer function model of the nominial portion of the first positioning element, ^Vres (z) is a transfer function model of the resonance portion of the first positioning element, and ^M(z) is a transfer function model of the dynamics of the second positioning element. This feedforward transfer function effectively cancels the resonances of the first positioning element without requiring the inversion of the resonance transfer function.

In the tracking control device and method, digital information is reproduced from a recording medium by a reproducing head, an error contained in the reproduced digital information is detected, and the relative position between the recording medium and the reproducing head is controlled by using the detection result. In addition, an arrangement capable of realizing a high tracking capability with respect to the non-linearity of a track is also disclosed. The arrangement forms a plurality of tracking error signals indicative of positional deviations between the reproducing head and a plurality of divided areas into which each track formed on the recording medium is divided, and selectively uses the plurality of tracking error signals.

    摘要: Methods and apparatus for ascertaining a position of a read/write head relative to a reference position on a rotatable disk in a computer disk drive are disclosed. In one aspect of the present invention, a method for determining the position of a read/write head relative to a reference position on a rotatable disk in a computer disk drive includes reading amplitudes of a set of servo bursts embedded in tracks of the disk and classifying the servo bursts into a converging servo burst set and a detection servo burst set around the reference position. The method also includes forming a position error signal by augmenting a detection servo burst signal with a converging servo burst signal as well as a normalization factor. The converging servo burst signal is formed from amplitudes of the converging servo burst set at the position of the read/write head. The detection servo burst signal is formed from amplitudes of the detection servo burst set at the position of the read/write head. The position error signal represents an offset from the reference position.

    摘要: A system for positioning a transducing head in a disc drive device over a selected track of a rotatable disc includes an actuator arm which is rotatable about an axis, a head suspension mechanism connected to the actuator arm, and a slider carrying a transducing head and supported by the head suspension mechanism. A low resolution motor moves the actuator arm about the axis to effect coarse movement of the head between tracks of the disc. A piezoelectric element is embedded in the actuator arm to distort the arm to effect fine positioning of the head. Control circuitry distributes electrical signals to the low resolution motor and the piezoelectric element to selectively control movement thereof. The piezoelectric element is embedded in the actuator arm by removing a predetermined amount of material from the actuator arm and bonding the piezoelectric element in the resulting space it the actuator arm.
