[Class 111.] A settling-tank for thickening pulps or sludges such as sewage sludge or gluten pulp, obtained as a bye-product in the manufacture of corn starch, is provided with means for stirring uniformly the thicker liquid in the compression zone so as to form vertical channels for the liquid to pass upwardly between the solids. As shown, rotary trusses 14, 15 which carry in known manner scraper blades 22, working over the floor of a settling tank 1 and moving the thickened matter to a central outlet, carry also, preferably on each side of each truss, a number of vertical rods 25, arranged in the form of a paling fence. The rods stir gently the thickening pulp and promote the desired separation. The material is supplied at one side of the tank from a launder 4 with openings 7 behind a baffle 6, and clear liquid passes away at the opposite side through openings 30 and over a weir 8 in a launder 5. The truss 15 may support a skimmer blade 26 and swing, gate 27 which sweep scum to an outlet.
