Abstract: 537,469. Agitating liquids in flocculating chambers. DORR CO., Inc. Oct. 23, 1939, No. 28484. Convention date, Oct. 21, 1938. [Class 86] [Also in Group I] Agitating blades in a flocculating chamber are arranged with the blade faces at an angle to the direction in which they move and co-operate with stationary blades to deflect the liquid in places at right angles to the normal flow of the liquid through the chamber. In the combined flocculation and settling apparatus shown the liquid is supplied to an inner flocculation chamber 41 through a vertical pipe 7 and apertures 8 and agitated therein by vertical blades 60 on a rotary support. The blades are arranged at an angle to their direction of motion so that they direct the liquid inwardly. The blades 60 pass between stationary vertical baffles 52 which are also arranged to direct the liquid inwards. The chamber 41 and the baffles 52 are supported from a truss 14 extending across the top of the settling tank 1. The rotary support for the blades 60 comprises radial arms, 72, 73, attached to a drum 66 supported by a bearing 68 and rotated by a motor 69. The drum 66 has apertures 22 corresponding to the apertures 8 for the entry of the liquid. The liquid passes from the flocculating chamber to the settling-tank through an annular passage between the outer edge of a plate 46 attached to the pipe 7 and the inner edge of an inclined annular plate 45 which forms a bottom for the chamber 41. Sludge settling in the tank is directed to a sump 12 by scoopers 21 attached to the pipe 7 which is supported by a shaft 27 rotated by mechanism 28.

Abstract: In the removal of minor crystallizable constituents or impurities contained in solution in a main solution, the minor constituents being of the kind that show decreasing solubility at increasing concentration of the main solution, the main solution is continuously concentrated within the metastable range of said minor constituents so as not to permit spontaneous crystallization thereof and is then mixed with fresh feed in such proportions that the mixture is supersaturated to such a degree that the minor constituents are precipitated and removed. The process is applicable to the removal from a solution of phosphoric acid of silicofluorides which on concentration of the acid tend to deposit as fluosilicates on the evaporator surfaces. Phosphoric acid solution is circulated continuously through a sedimentation tank 27 and an evaporator 12 at a speed controlled by a valve 37. The solution is concentrated in the evaporator 12 within the metastable range and then passes through a barometric pipe 22 into a vessel 23 to which fresh feed is added through a pipe 24 at a rate controlled by a valve 25 so that the impurities crystallize out in the tank 23. The solution is then pumped to the tank 27 where the crystals settle out and are removed through an outlet 32 and pipe 33, a portion being returned through a line 34 for seeding the solution in the tank 23. The evaporator is provided with a trap 15 and condenser 13.
