    Abstract: A system for measuring a dimension of an energy cell includes a wire cable, a tensioning system, and a measurement system. The wire cable includes a first end and a second end, and is disposable about an outer periphery of an energy cell. The tensioning system includes a first tensioner attached to a first end of the wire cable and a second tensioner attached to a second end of the wire cable. The measurement system includes a first linear displacement transducer and a second linear displacement transducer that are in communication with a controller. The first linear displacement transducer is connected to the first tensioner, and the second linear displacement transducer is connected to the second tensioner. The measurement system is operative to determine a dimensional parameter of the energy cell.

    Abstract: A battery charging system includes a charger that is dynamically controlled during charging, including during rapid charging events that include elevated voltage and/or elevated current levels. The charger is connectable to a battery cell of a rechargeable energy storage system. Operation includes transferring electric power having a charging current at a maximum charging rate to the battery cell. An anode potential offset setpoint is determined. A predicted anode potential offset is determined at an interface between the anode and the separator based upon the cell voltage for the battery cell. The charger is controlled to transfer the electric power to the battery cell based upon a temperature distribution in the battery cell and a difference between the anode potential offset setpoint and the predicted anode potential offset.

    Abstract: A negative electrode of a lithium battery includes a current collector and a negative electrode layer disposed on a major surface of the current collector. The negative electrode layer exhibits a gradient structure including a proximal portion adjacent the major surface of the current collector and an opposite distal portion that defines a facing surface of the negative electrode layer. The negative electrode layer is configured such that a power density of the distal portion of the negative electrode layer is greater than that of the proximal portion of the negative electrode layer, and an energy density of the proximal portion of the negative electrode layer is greater than that of the distal portion of the negative electrode layer.

    Abstract: A method, apparatus, and control system for a battery cell include a heat exchanger in thermal contact with the battery cell, and a first controller. The first controller connects to the heat exchanger, and monitors the battery cell. The first controller includes a reduced order electrochemical model, a heat generation model, and a heat generation controller. The first controller determines a target parameter for the battery cell, and determines battery cell parameters. The reduced order electrochemical model determines internal ROM variables based upon the battery cell parameters. The heat generation model determines an electrochemical heat generation parameter from the battery cell based upon the internal ROM variables and the target parameter for the battery cell. The heat generation controller determines a heat work parameter based upon the electrochemical heat generation and the target parameter for the battery cell. The heat exchanger is controlled based upon the heat work parameter.
