Abstract: An electrode for an electrochemical cell includes a silicon-containing electroactive material that includes a plurality of silicon-containing electroactive material particles and a polymeric network that forms polymeric cages around each of the silicon-containing electroactive material particles of the plurality. The polymeric cages include polyacrylic acid (PAA), lithiated polyacrylic acid (PAALi), or a combination of polyacrylic acid (PAA) and lithiated polyacrylic acid (PAALi) covalently bonded with poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA). The polymeric network has a mass ratio of the polyacrylic acid (PAA), the lithiated polyacrylic acid (PAALi), or the combination of the polyacrylic acid (PAA) and the lithiated polyacrylic acid (PAALi) to the poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) of greater than or equal to about 0.5 to less than or equal to about 10.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a gel membrane for a battery cell includes supplying a first substrate to a first roller; heating a gel membrane solution in a tank, wherein the gel membrane solution includes a polymer and a liquid electrolyte comprising one or more lithium salts; arranging a slot die within a predetermined distance of the first substrate located on the first roller; pumping the gel membrane solution into an inlet of the slot die; depositing a gel membrane layer from an outlet of the slot die onto the first substrate supported by the first roller; and cooling the gel membrane layer on the first substrate.

Abstract: An electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions is provided. The electrochemical cell includes a positive electrode having a positive electroactive material selected from the group consisting of LiNixM2-xO2 (where M is selected from the group consisting of cobalt, manganese, aluminum, and combinations thereof and x≥0.8), and a negative electrode having a negative electroactive composite material including a carbonaceous material and silicon oxide (SiOx, 0.95≤x≤1.05). The positive electrode has a single-sided loading capacity at room temperature between about 4.5 mAh/cm2 and about 6.5 mAh/cm2. The negative electrode has a single-sided loading capacity at room temperature between about 4.5 mAh/cm2 and about 5.5 mAh/cm2.

Abstract: A pre-lithiated, precursor electrode includes an electroactive material layer, a current collector, and a lithium foil disposed between the electroactive material layer and the current collector. A method of preparing an electrode to be used in an electrochemical cell is provide. The method includes preparing a pre-lithiated, precursor electrode. Preparing the pre-lithiated precursor electrode includes contacting at least a first electroactive material layer with a first surface of a lithium foil assembly, where the lithium foil assembly includes a current collector and at least a first lithium foil disposed on or adjacent to a first surface of the current collector. The method may further include contacting the prelithiated, precursor electrode with an electrolyte in the electrochemical cell, where the first lithium foil at least partially or fully dissolves when contacted by the electrolyte to form the electrode and a lithium reservoir in the electrochemical cell.

Abstract: Hybrid lithium-ion electrochemical cells include a first electrode having a first polarity and a first electroactive material that reversibly cycles lithium ions having a first maximum operational voltage and a second electrode having the first polarity with a second electroactive material having a second maximum operational voltage. A difference between the second and first maximum operational voltages defines a predetermined voltage difference. Also included are at least one third electrode including a third electroactive material that reversibly cycles lithium ions having a second polarity opposite to the first polarity, a separator, and electrolyte. A voltage modification component (e.g., diode) is in electrical communication with the first and the second electrodes. In a first operational state corresponding to charging, the at least one voltage modification component is configured to induce a voltage drop corresponding to the predetermined voltage difference providing high power density and high energy density hybrid lithium-ion electrochemical cells.
