Abstract: A negative electrode includes a metal foil and a negative electrode active material layer coated on the metal foil. The upper and lower portions of the negative electrode are coated with a binder. The negative electrode has an excellent adhesion to the separator, thereby preventing folding of a separator when manufacturing a stack cell. A method of preparing the negative electrode which minimizes reduction in a manufacturing yield and occurrence of accidents due to low voltage defects is also provided. A secondary battery including the negative electrode, and a method of making the secondary battery, are also provided.

Abstract: Silicon particles for active materials and electro-chemical cells are provided. The active materials comprising silicon particles described herein can be utilized as an electrode material for a battery. In certain embodiments, the composite material includes greater than 0% and less than about 90% by weight of silicon particles. The silicon particles have an average particle size between about 0.1 μm and about 30 μm and a surface including nanometer-sized features. The composite material also includes greater than 0% and less than about 90% by weight of one or more types of carbon phases. At least one of the one or more types of carbon phases is a substantially continuous phase.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for fabricating electrodes used in energy storage devices are provided. In some implementations a surface of the electrode is activated for (a) a pre-treatment process to remove loosely held particles from the electrode surface; (b) a pre-treatment process to activate the surface of the electrode material for improved bonding or wetting for subsequently deposited materials; (c) a post-treatment of the pre-lithiation layer to improve subsequent bonding with additionally deposited layer, for example, passivation layers; and/or (d) a post-treatment of the pre-lithiation layer to improve/accelerate absorption of the lithium into the underlying electrode material.

Abstract: An electrode binder for use with rechargeable batteries is disclosed. In embodiments, the electrode binder comprises a styrenic block copolymer (SBC) for use with an electrode active material, such as Si, Si alloys, Si compounds, Si composites, carbon black, or graphite in an amount of at least 20 wt. %. The SBC can be unsaturated (USBC) or hydrogenated (HSBC), or functionalized, wherein functionality includes maleation, epoxidation, silanation, carboxylic acid/salt, quaternary ammonium salt, sulfonation and others. In embodiments, the electrode binder is selected from isoprene rubber (IR), silicone-containing block copolymer, and an electronically conductive block copolymer containing a block that is unhydrogenated CHD (cyclohexadiene) block.
