    Abstract: A structural instrument panel member for an instrument panel assembly of a vehicle comprises a cross beam, a steering column support, a first and second HVAC duct, and a first dash panel mount. The cross beam mount has a first surface, a first side, a second side and a first, second, third, fourth and fifth walls. The cross beam mount is fastened to a cross beam of the vehicle. The steering column support extends from the first side of the cross beam mount. The first and second HVAC duct each have a first end and a second end. The first HVAC duct is disposed on the second side of the cross beam mount and the second HVAC duct is disposed adjacent the first HVAC duct. The first dash panel mount extends from the first HVAC duct and fastened to a dash panel of the vehicle.

    Abstract: A filament suitable for use with a fused filament fabrication process includes an elongated body. The elongated body defines and extends along a central longitudinal axis of the elongated body. The filament includes at least one continuous reinforcing strand, which is encapsulated within the elongated body. The continuous reinforcing strand extends uninterrupted between a first end and a second end of the elongated body, along the central longitudinal axis. The elongated body includes a ferromagnetic sensitive element that is capable of inductively heating the elongated body. The ferromagnetic sensitive element may include iron particles mixed with the polymer forming the elongated body, or may be formed by the continuous reinforcing strand including a ferromagnetic sensitive material.

    Abstract: A system and method for joining structures includes a method of joining a first panel to a second panel. A first workpiece formed of a first material is positioned adjacent a second workpiece formed of a second material and joined with a joining process. At least one welding insert is formed from the joined first and second workpieces having an upper portion formed of the first material and a lower portion formed of the second material. The at least one welding insert is positioned between a first panel formed of the first material and a second panel formed of the second material and placed between first and second electrodes of a welding device. First and second electrodes of the welding device generate an electric current to join the first panel, at least one welding insert, and the second panel.

    Abstract: A method for fused filament fabrication of a thermoplastic part includes: mixing an additive material that is electrically conductive with a thermoplastic material; forming a filament made of materials that include the thermoplastic material mixed with the additive material: passing the filament through an alternating magnetic field such that the additive material is heated by the alternating magnetic field and thus heats the thermoplastic material of the filament; and depositing the materials of the filament on a previously deposited layer of the part to form a newly deposited layer of the part. The thermoplastic material in the newly deposited layer is sufficiently heated such that the thermoplastic material of the newly deposited layer fuses with the thermoplastic material of the previously deposited layer. The method may include: extruding the materials of the filament through a nozzle; and continuing to deposit the materials of the filament until the part is manufactured.
