Abstract: A method for forming a high temperature coating includes applying carbon powder to a surface of a carbon/carbon (C/C) composite substrate to force the carbon powder into one or more surface voids of the surface of the C/C composite substrate. The carbon powder has a substantially same composition and morphology as a surface portion of the C/C composite substrate. The method includes applying a metal slurry to the surface of the C/C composite substrate following the application of the carbon powder and reacting a metal of the metal slurry with carbon of the carbon powder and carbon of the surface portion of the C/C composite substrate to form a metal-rich antioxidant layer of a metal carbide on the C/C composite substrate.

Abstract: A method for forming a high temperature coating includes forming a pre-sintered ceramic coating on a ceramic composite substrate. The pre-sintered ceramic coating includes a plurality of ceramic particles. The method further includes sintering at least a portion of the pre-sintered ceramic coating by heating the portion of the pre-sintered ceramic coating to a sintering temperature of the plurality of ceramic particles using joule heating. The sintering temperature is greater than about 1000 degrees Celsius (° C.).

Abstract: Methods for fabricating protective coating systems for gas turbine engine applications are provided. An exemplary method of applying a protective coating to a substrate includes the steps of providing a substrate formed of a ceramic matrix composite material, forming a first coating layer directly on to the substrate and comprising an oxygen barrier material, a compliance material, or a bonding material and forming a second coating layer directly on to the first coating layer and comprising a thermal barrier material. The method optionally includes forming a third coating layer partially directly on to the second coating layer and partially within at least some of the plurality of pores of the second coating layer.

Abstract: A method for using a shape memory alloy (SMA) with a non-evaporable getter (NEG) employed in a vacuum device is disclosed. The method comprises coupling a NEG component to a SMA component to form an NEG/SMA assembly pair; heating the NEG/SMA assembly pair to activate the NEG component; and packaging the activated NEG component with the SMA component to form an NEG/SMA package having a gas tight seal. The method further comprises installing the NEG/SMA package in the vacuum device; and heating the installed NEG/SMA package such that the SMA component is actuated to expose the activated NEG component to a vacuum chamber in the vacuum device.

Abstract: This disclosure provides a method of pressure sintering an environmental barrier coating on a surface of a ceramic substrate to form an article. The method includes the steps of etching the surface of the ceramic substrate to texture the surface, disposing an environmental barrier coating on the etched surface of the ceramic substrate wherein the environmental barrier coating includes a rare earth silicate, and pressure sintering the environmental barrier coating on the etched surface of the ceramic substrate in an inert or nitrogen atmosphere at a pressure of greater than atmospheric pressure such that at least a portion of the environmental barrier coating is disposed in the texture of the surface of the ceramic substrate thereby forming the article.

Abstract: Methods are disclosed for fabricating heat exchangers and Heat Exchanger (HX) tubes, as are heat exchangers fabricated in accordance with such methods. In embodiments, the method includes fabricating an HX tube by at least partially forming the elongated tube body utilizing a cold spray process during which a metallic feedstock powder is deposited over a removable mandrel. The HX tube is separated from the removable mandrel at some juncture following cold spray deposition of the tube body.
