    Abstract: A multi-degree-of-freedom electromagnetic machine includes a first structure, a second structure, and a control. The first structure is configured to rotate about a spin axis and about a tilt axis that is perpendicular to the spin axis, and includes a first spin conductor, a second spin conductor, and a tilt conductor, which together form a general shape of a surface. The second structure is disposed adjacent to the first structure and includes a plurality of magnets. The control is configured to controllably supply alternating current (AC) to the first and second spin conductors and direct current (DC) to the tilt conductor, wherein the first structure continuously rotates about the spin axis in response to the AC being supplied to the first and second spin conductors, and rotates about the tilt axis to a tilt position in response to the DC being supplied to the tilt conductor.

    Abstract: An assembly includes a first structure, a first bearing assembly, and a second structure. The first structure has a first predetermined stiffness, and the first bearing assembly is mounted on the first structure. The second structure, which has a second predetermined stiffness, is mounted on the first bearing assembly, whereby relative motion about a first rotational axis is allowed between the first and second structure. At least one of the first structure and the second structure distort when a force is supplied thereto along the first rotational axis, and the distortion of at least one of the first structure and the second structure imparts a first preload force on the first bearing assembly.

    Abstract: An electromagnetic machine includes a spherical stator, an armature, a first coil, and a second coil. The spherical stator has an outer surface, and the outer surface has a plurality of spaced-apart protuberances formed thereon. Each protuberance extends radially from, and is disposed normal to, the outer surface. The armature is disposed adjacent to the spherical stator and includes a magnet that emanates a magnetic field. The magnet has at least one of its magnetic poles facing the spherical stator. The first coil is wound around at least a portion of the spherical stator, and is disposed between the plurality of spaced-apart protuberances and along latitudinal lines of the spherical stator.
