    Abstract: Methods and systems for conducting batch multi-effect distillation are disclosed. A multi-effect distillation system and one or more isolation devices are provided. A feed stream, consisting of water and a solute, is passed from a feed source into a brine side of the plurality of heat exchangers. The feed source is isolated from the plurality of heat exchangers by closing the one or more isolation devices. A first of the plurality of heat exchangers is heated by the heat source. A steam stream and a brine concentrate stream are produced in all but a last of the plurality of heat exchangers. A condensate stream from the steam stream is produced in all but the first of the plurality of heat exchangers. A warmed feed stream is produced in the last of the plurality of heat exchangers.

    Abstract: A winch drum is disclosed. In a first aspect, a first set of teeth are positioned around an outer perimeter of a drum. The first set of teeth taper from a first crown to a first base. A second set of teeth are positioned around the outer perimeter of the drum. The second set of teeth taper from a second crown to a second base. The second set of teeth are offset from the first set of teeth such that a gap between the first bases and the second bases forms a sinusoidal channel for a line to follow the first set of teeth and the second set of teeth becomes a guide for the line so that the line can engage the sinusoidal channel. The line follows the sinusoidal channel and each change of direction along the sinusoidal path causes the line to engage by friction with the first bases and the second bases. In a second aspect, the drum includes a trough that follows a sinusoidal path and wherein the trough is narrower at its bottom than at its top.

    Abstract: A system for sanitizing water in a container is disclosed. The system includes a sanitizing chamber, separate from the container, sized to hold a small portion of the water from the container. A first conduit conveys water from the container to the chamber. A second conduit conveys water from the chamber to the container. A pump moves water from the container, through the first conduit into the chamber and from the chamber, through the second conduit into the container. A heater heats the water in the sanitizing chamber to a temperature and for a time sufficient to destroy or deactivate undesirable microorganisms. The first and second conduits each comprise at least one heat exchanger whereby water in the first conduit is heated by the water in the second conduit and water in the second conduit is cooled by water in the first conduit.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for disposing of blackwater are disclosed. A first vessel contains a screw running through the vessel from a first end to a second end. The screw is surrounded radially by a filter. The first vessel has a blackwater inlet adjacent the first end. An extrusion plate is adjacent the second end of the first vessel. A combustor vessel is configured to receive a solids component from the extrusion plate. A blackwater stream, consisting of a liquid component and the solids component, is passed through the blackwater inlet into the first vessel, is conveyed by the screw from the first end to the second end, and is pressurized against the extrusion plate. The liquid component is thereby forced from the blackwater stream through the filter and the solids component is forced through the extrusion plate into the combustor. The combustor is configured to combust the solids component.

    Abstract: A device for filtering air for a user comprising a frame formed in a generally oval-shaped band, the band encircling the user's head, with an upper portion extending above and behind the user's ears and a lower portion extending below and in front of the user's ears. The device includes components mounted to the frame, comprising an air intake filter mounted on the frame and communicating on one side with ambient air outside the device and on the other side with an inlet duct and an air outlet filter mounted on the frame and communicating on one side with air inside the device and on the other side with ambient air outside the device. The device also includes a battery-powered air mover mounted on the frame and operable to pull air through the air intake filter and through the inlet duct and push air out into the inside of the device and a rechargeable battery mounted on the frame to power the air mover. The device further includes a transparent face shield mounted on one side of the frame in such a way as to create an airtight seal between the face shield and the one side of the frame, a fabric component made from an air impermeable fabric and mounted on the other side of the frame in such a way as to create an airtight seal between the fabric component and the other side of the frame, and to encircle the user's neck, a head harness configured to rest on the user's head and support the frame with its components mounted thereon, and wherein the components are mounted on the upper portion the frame and on the lower portion of the frame so as to achieve a weight distribution ratio between the upper portion of the frame with components mounted thereon and the lower portion of the frame with components mounted thereon, the ratio being between 1 to 1.5 and 1.5 to 1.
