Abstract: Drug delivery systems with reduced hold-up volumes are provided. The drug delivery systems include a cartridge configured to hold a liquid drug. A cartridge stopper is positioned in a first portion of the cartridge. A needle guide component is positioned within the cartridge stopper. A needle is positioned within a central opening of the needle guide. A plunger is positioned in a second portion of the cartridge. The plunger includes a fluid path pocket facing and aligned with the central opening of the needle guide component. The plunger is driven toward the cartridge stopper to expel the liquid drug from the cartridge through the needle. An end of the needle can be positioned within the fluid path pocket when the plunger is pushed against the cartridge stopper, ensuring that only a small volume of the liquid drug remains in the cartridge when delivery of the liquid drug is completed.

Abstract: The exemplary embodiments may provide a secure framework for devices in a drug delivery system to wirelessly communicate. The secure framework may use encrypted keys to carry credentials and to specify the rights of the devices presenting the credentials. The devices in the drug delivery system present the keys at the time that they wish to wirelessly communicate with other devices in the drug delivery system. The devices receiving such keys, decrypt the keys and verify if the credentials are valid. If the credentials are valid, a wireless communication session between devices may be established.

Abstract: Systems and methods for delivering a medication to a person experiencing an emergency medical event without requiring intervention or action on the part of the person. A device encases a reservoir of medication and a delivery mechanism. Sensors in the housing sense a physical attribute of the person and circuitry monitors information collected by the sensors to determine if the person is experiencing a severe medical condition or event based on the information. An input device on or in the housing, such as a button, may be used or activated by the person if the detected condition or event is a false positive to cancel further action. If the system does not include the button or if the user does not press it in time, the system activates the delivery device and injects the medication into the person.

Abstract: Disclosed are examples of devices, systems and techniques for delivering a liquid drug. An example delivery pump device may include a chamber body defining a pump chamber, an inlet valve to receive a liquid drug and a hard stop. A plunger configured with a plunger channel. A sliding fluidic member including a needle coupling, a flow orifice, a face seal and an anchor portion that may be movable within the pump chamber. A pump mechanism may be coupled to the anchor portion and operable to pull the anchor portion and the plunger toward the hard stop. Techniques may include determining a time to output a liquid drug from the delivery pump device; generating a control signal to actuate the delivery pump device; applying a control signal to the pump mechanism; determining that a control signal is to be removed from the pump mechanism; and delivering the liquid drug.

Abstract: Systems and methods for automatically delivering medication to a user. An automated drug delivery system may include a sensor and a wearable automated drug delivery device. The wearable automated drug delivery device may be configured to couple to the skin of a user and may include a controller and a pump. The pump may be configured to output the medication. The controller may be within the wearable automated drug delivery device. The sensor may be coupled to the user and may be configured to collect information regarding the user. The controller of the wearable automated drug delivery device may use the collected information to locally determine an amount of medication to be output from the wearable automated drug delivery device and cause delivery of the amount of medication.

Abstract: Drive systems for a drug delivery device are provided. The drive systems can be positioned within a container that stores a liquid drug to be delivered to a user. The drive systems can be coupled to a plunger positioned within the container. The drive systems can be incrementally advanced to drive the plunger further into the container, thereby expelling a portion of the stored liquid drug from the container for delivery to the user. The container can be any type of container including a pre-filled, standardized drug cartridge. The drive systems and container can be components of a wearable drug delivery device.

Abstract: A wearable drug delivery device that can deliver a liquid drug stored in a container to a patient is provided. The container can be a prefilled cartridge that can be loaded into the drug delivery device by the patient or that can be preloaded within the drug delivery device when provided to the patient. A sealed end of the container is pierced to couple the stored liquid drug to a needle conduit that is coupled to a needle insertion component that provides access to the patient. A drive system of the drug delivery device can expel the liquid drug from the cartridge to the patient through the needle conduit. The drive system can include a spring coupled to a plurality of force transfer elements. The force transfer elements can have a variety of shapes and configurations.

Abstract: A wearable drug delivery device that can deliver high volumes of liquid drugs stored in one or more corresponding containers to a patient is provided. The wearable drug delivery device can include first and second containers to store first and second liquid drugs, respectively. A first set of energy transfer spheres can be coupled to a first spring and a first plunger positioned within the first container. A second set of energy transfer spheres can be coupled to a second spring and a second plunger positioned within the second container. The first spring can expand to advance the first set of energy transfer spheres and the first plunger to expel the first liquid drug for delivery to the patient. The second spring can expand to advance the second set of energy transfer spheres and the second plunger to expel the second liquid drug for delivery to the patient.

Abstract: A multi-stage drug delivery system having a cartridge and multiple plungers positioned in the cartridge and spaced apart from one another is provided. A first plunger, a second plunger, and the cartridge form a first chamber storing a first drug. The second plunger and the cartridge form a second chamber storing a second drug. A cannula pierces the first plunger to access the first drug. As the first plunger is driven toward the second plunger, the first drug is expelled from the first chamber for delivery to a patient through the cannula. After expelling the first liquid drug, the cannula can pierce the second plunger to access the second drug. As the first and second plungers are together driven toward a closed end of the cartridge, the second liquid drug is expelled from the second chamber for delivery to the patient through the cannula.
