Abstract: An optical device includes an optical element including a liquid crystal cell configured to distribute light emitted from a light source, a power supply part configured to generate first and second potentials, a control signal generation circuit part configured to generate a control signal that controls a pulse width of each of the first and second potentials, and a switch circuit part configured to output a first potential signal including the first potential with a first pulse width and the second potential with a second pulse width based on the control signal. The liquid crystal cell includes a first substrate on which first and second transparent electrodes are alternately arranged in a first direction, and a second substrate on which third and fourth transparent electrodes are alternately arranged in a second direction. The first potential signal is input to the first transparent electrode.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a display device includes a display panel in which pixel units are arranged, and a controller configured to generate image signals by multiplying display data externally supplied to each line by a luminosity adjustment factor, to supply the generated image signals to the pixel units, to accumulate power consumption of each line, and to execute black insertion if the accumulated power consumption is determined to be greater than power consumption of one previous display frame by a predetermined value, wherein the luminosity adjustment factor is acquired by substituting the power consumption of one previous frame to a decreasing function, and a display pattern including a plurality of continuing black display lines is synchronized with supply of the image signals and is displayed moving the same direction of a screen scanning direction of the display panel during the black insertion.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a display device includes a plurality of light sources, a display panel illuminated by the light sources and a drive circuit which drives the light sources time-divisionally to emit light sequentially based on a first image signal for displaying an image in color. The drive circuit determines whether visibility of the image displayed in color deteriorates because of external light, extracts from the first image signal a brightness signal when determining that the visibility of the image deteriorates, generates a second image signal based on the brightness signal, and drives the display panel based on the second image signal when the second image signal is generated.
