An electrical connector adapted to be mechanically joined to the stripped end of a wire for completing an electrical connection between the wire and another circuit component. The connector includes a metallic connector element and an insulative sleeve formed of heat shrinkable material. The connector element has a connector portion for mechanical connection to the circuit component and a wire-receiving portion spaced from the connector portion for accepting the wire and having a part for being mechanically joined to the wire. One end of the sleeve is disposed about and held by the connector portion with the other end of the sleeve disposed between the one end of the sleeve and the part of the wire-receiving portion of the element. The sleeve has a memory characteristic that upon application of heat the sleeve extends axially and shrinks radially whereby the wire-receiving end can be joined to the wire without interference from the sleeve and the subsequent application of heat to the sleeve causes it to extend over and shrink about the wire-receiving end of the element. As a method of applying an insulative sleeve about an electrical connector, the invention includes several steps. One end of the sleeve, which is formed from a length of insulative heat shrinkable tubing, is fixed about the connector portion of the element with the other end of the sleeve extending toward but terminating short of the part of the wire-receiving portion to be joined to the wire. The other end of the sleeve has a memory characteristic so that upon selective application of heat it extends axially and shrinks radially. Next the wire and the wire-receiving portion are mechanically joined. Finally the periphery of the other end of the sleeve is progressively heated from adjacent the one end of the sleeve toward the wire-receiving portion until the other end of the sleeve extends over and contracts about the wire-receiving portion.

Termination tooling adapted for use with a prime mover, such as a bench press, for terminating a flat cable in a connector of the type having an insulative base and cover with the base carrying a plurality of insulation displacement terminal elements extending toward the cover. The tooling includes a termination die and holding means for positioning the connector with respect to the termination die. The prime mover is connected to cause the die and the holding means to undergo reciprocal movement relative to one another. The tooling also includes stop means disposed adjacent one side of a connector positioned in the holding means for engaging the leading end of a flat cable. Cable movement means is provided for moving the leading end of the cable a predetermined distance away from the stop toward the connector prior to termination of the connector.

A method of fabricating a wire harness, the invention comprises several steps. The connectors are positioned at desired locations at a first station. Then wires in lengths dictated by the dimensions of the finished harness are run between predetermined terminal element locations at the connectors. An electrical connector for mechanically joining a plurality of wires to a plurality of other electrical components and for providing low resistance electrical paths between predetermined ones of the plurality of wires and preselected ones of the plurality of other electrical components. The connector includes an insulative housing having a front wall, a back wall and a plurality of spaced barrier walls extending between the front wall and back wall to define an array of cavities extending through the housing. The connector also includes a plurality of metallic terminal elements each of which has a wire terminating portion and a portion for receiving another electrical component with one terminal element preloaded into each of the housing cavities prior to wiring of the connector. The wire terminating portion has an open-ended elongate wire-receiving slot having a width less than the diameter of the conductor in the wire to be terminated in the wire terminating portion so that in response to the insertion of the wire laterally of its axis into the slot, the insulation of the wire is removed. The wire terminating portion further includes an entrance adjoining the slot and of greater width than the slot to guide the wire into the slot. The housing and/or the terminal element has holding means for mechanically holding each wire in alignment with the entrance to the slot corresponding to that wire prior to insertion of the wire into the slot whereby after positioning of the wires into the holding means and prior to insertion of the wires into the slots, the connector can be physically moved without dissociation of the wires from their corresponding slots.
