Abstract:
Near net shape metal articles are cast from powder feedstock using a focused high energy beam which melts successive layers of powder as it repetitively traces the shape of the article over a substrate without the necessity for refocusing. Powder is fed into a cavity in which the article is formed at a rate to maintain a depth which provides lateral support for, and therefore forms a mold for, a thick layer of powder which is melted by the energy beam to add each layer to the article. The high energy laser or electron beam has a power density sufficient to penetrate the melted layer of powder and melt the surface of the underlying substrate or layer just enough to provide a good metallurgical bond for the layer being added. A copper fixture which supports the substrate while the article is being formed, serves as a heat sink and forms the cavity which confines the powder to the vicinity of the article being formed. Various shapes can be cast through selected programming of the repetitive pattern of relative motion between the energy beam and the substrate.
Abstract:
A compact spray gun using a single air supply port to actuate two piston valves and act as an air refinement system. An externally adjustable cartridge type packaging assembly needle piston valve seals the resin. A spool valve portion of a catalyst piston valve having O-ring seals is separable external from the piston portion. Leak detection ports are provided so the operator can easily determine when to adjustment or replacement of the packing or O-ring seals. The catalyst piston valve controls the mixing of the catalyst and air from a second air supply port. In a preferred embodiment, the resin piston valve controls a valve which provide air to the chopper system simultaneously with spraying of the resin.

Oscillatory motion apparatus has a first reciprocating rod oriented generally perpendicularly with respect to a second reciprocating rod. A first trammel gear is pivotally secured to the first and second rods. Reciprocation of the rods produces responsive rotation of the trammel gear. An output gear may be rotated responsive to rotation of the trammel gear. The invention may be embodied in an engine block and two or more pairs of opposed cylinders each containing pistons adapted for reciprocation therein is provided. The rods, which may be connecting rods, connect pairs of opposed pistons. The connecting rods are preferably oriented generally perpendicularly with respect to each other. The connecting rods are rotatably connected to the trammel gear. Reciprocation of the pistons results in rotation of the trammel gear which is operatively associated with an output gear to produce rotary output. In one embodiment a bifurcated connecting rod permits two trammel gears to be employed with corresponding use of two output gears. In another embodiment, a planetary arrangement is provided. The engine is compact, lightweight and has a very high horsepower to weight ratio.
Abstract:
A flow meter apparatus for measuring the mass flow rates of fluids passed through two essentially parallel, cantilever mounted U-shaped flow tubes where, instead of the fluid serially passing through one of the U-shaped flow tubes and then through the second U-shaped flow tube, the fluid is essentially evenly divided and half of the fluid is passed through one U-shaped flow tube and the other half of the fluid is passed through the other U-shaped flow tube. The two U-shaped flow tubes are sinusoidally driven as the tines of a tuning fork, and when a fluid is passed through the oscillating U-shaped flow tubes Coriolis forces are generated which torsionally deflect the U-shaped flow tubes. Such torsional deflections are a function of the mass flow rate of the fluid passing through the two U-shaped flow tubes.

Apparatus and method for mass flow measurement utilizing a substantially "U" shaped conduit mounted in a cantilever manner at the legs thereof, .[.means for oscillating the conduit, and means for measuring.]. .Iadd.so that, when the conduit is oscillated, sensors mounted on the conduit can measure .Iaddend.the Coriolis force by measurement of the force moment or the angular motion of the conduit around an axis substantially symmetrical to the legs of the conduit. The force moment is measured by sensing incipient movement around the axis, and generating and measuring a nulling force. In preferred embodiments, the oscillating means are mounted on a spring arm having a natural frequency substantially equal to that of the "U" shaped conduit, and in a particularly preferred .[.displacement.]. .Iadd.embodiment .Iaddend.the measuring .[.means are sensors.]. .Iadd.sensors are .Iaddend.mounted on the "U" shaped conduit and adapted to measure, with proper direction sense, the time differential between the leading and trailing portions of the "U" shaped conduit passing through the plane of the "U" shaped conduit at substantially midpoint of the oscillation thereof.
Abstract:
A system is provided for predicting in advance the result of a conditional branch instruction in a computer system. The system includes a hash mechanism, a random access memory, an address buffer, a branch outcome result receiving means and a counter buffer. The hash mechanism and memory use the input branch instruction address to produce a count which in effect is a way of weighting recent branch history to predict the branch decision. The counts are stored in the random access memory (RAM). The random access memory is addressed by the hashed branch instruction address to produce the system result.
Abstract:
A non-invasive method for determining and characterizing the presence of damage or abnormalities resulting from or concomitant with systemic hypertension in subject. This method is comprised of the acquisition of ocular image(s) and subsequent evaluation, classification and/or interpretation of these image(s). The ocular image(s) may be acquired by photography. Evaluation, classification, and/or interpretation may be automated or involve the active participation of a human. The ocular images may be classified into either a normal or clinical group or compared to an algorithm of hypertensive symptoms. The ocular images may, additionally, be processed and have the pertinent characteristics extracted to make the classification more exact.
Abstract:
A hydraulic circuit for a vehicle includes a first loop that includes, in serial order, a first hydraulic pump, a first hydraulic line, a hydraulic motor and a second hydraulic line. A second hydraulic pump and a third valve control low pressure fluid from the second pump to the hydraulic motor casing. The low pressure fluid through the third valve maintains the motor pistons retracted when the motor is not being used. For actuating the motor, the third valve is actuated for disconnecting the second pump and relieving pressure from the motor casing. Low pressure is then provided to the first and second lines for extending the motor pistons. The first and second valves are then actuated for isolating the first and second lines from one another, and the first pump is used to power the motor. The first, second and third valves are advantageously solenoid cartridge valves.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for igniting combustible materials in a combustion chamber of a combustion engine using corona discharge plasma from a quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator. A tapered quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator is adapted to mate with the combustion chamber. The quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator is coupled with an energy shaping means, or waveform generator, that develops the appropriate waveform for triggering radio frequency oscillations in the quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator. A loop coupling is angularly positioned within the quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator to match impedances between the quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator and the energy shaping means, or waveform generator. Radio frequency oscillations produce a standing wave in the quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator and a corona discharge plasma develops near the center conductor. The corona discharge plasma developed near the center conductor ignites the combustible materials in the combustion chamber of the combustion engine.

A second hydraulic pump and a third valve is used to control the flow of low pressure fluid from the second pump to the hydraulic motor casing.
