    摘要: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for measuring and monitoring vibrational or similar motion in mechanical elements. Retroreflectors on the elements are illuminated with monochromatic light, preferably a laser, and the reflected beams form an interference pattern. Shifts in the interference fringes correspond to motion which changes the relative length of the paths of reflected light and these shifts are counted or analyzed to monitor such motion. Both micro and macro motion can be monitored.

    摘要: A leak detector for monitoring, in an area being investigated, the presence of a liquid having a characteristic fluorescence spectrum. The leak detector includes a radiation source, with the radiation provided to the area being investigated. The detector also includes a collector for collecting radiation, in the fluorescence emission band of the liquid being monitored, emitted from the area being investigated. The presence of this liquid is sensed by detection of a threshold level of collected radiation. The size of a stain of the liquid relative to the size of the field of view of the collector is then determined.

    摘要: An infrared trace element detection system including an optical cell into which the sample fluid to be examined is introduced and removed. Also introduced into the optical cell is a sample beam of infrared radiation in a first wavelength band which is significantly absorbed by the trace element and a second wavelength band which is not significantly absorbed by the trace element for passage through the optical cell through the sample fluid. The output intensities of the sample beam of radiation are selectively detected in the first and second wavelength bands. The intensities of a reference beam of the radiation are similarly detected in the first and second wavelength bands. The sensed output intensity of the sample beam in one of the first and second wavelength bands is normalized with respect to the other and similarly, the intensity of the reference beam of radiation in one of the first and second wavelength bands is normalized with respect to the other. The normalized sample beam intensity and normalized reference beam intensity are then compared to provide a signal from which the amount of trace element in the sample fluid can be determined.

    摘要: A spark discharge trace element detection system is provided which includes a spark chamber including a pair of electrodes for receiving a sample of gas to be analyzed at no greater than atmospheric pressure. A voltage is provided across the electrodes for generating a spark in the sample. The intensity of the emitted radiation in at least one primary selected narrow band of the radiation is detected. Each primary band corresponds to an element to be detected in the gas. The intensity of the emission in each detected primary band is integrated during the afterglow time interval of the spark emission and a signal representative of the integrated intensity of the emission in each selected primary bond is utilized to determine the concentration of the corresponding element in the gas.

    摘要: An ultraviolet absorption hygrometer is provided including a source of pulsed ultraviolet radiation for providing radiation in a first wavelength region where water absorbs significantly and in a second proximate wavelength region where water absorbs weakly. Ultraviolet radiation in the first and second regions which has been transmitted through a sample path of atmosphere is detected. The intensity of the radiation transmitted in each of the first and second regions is compared and from this comparison the amount of water in the sample path is determined.

    摘要: Disclosed is a system and method for remote detection and identification of unknown chemical species in gaseous, aerosol, and liquid states. A pulsed infrared laser is directed at an unknown chemical mass which absorbs energy at the laser wavelength. Due to molecular energy transfer processes, the absorbed laser energy can be re-emitted in one or more wavelength regions nonresonant with the laser wavelength. The re-emitted energy is detected for a period of time which is comparable to or less than the characteristic time for the absorbed radiative energy to be dissipated as heat. The nonresonant infrared emission spectrum of the unknown chemical species is detected with several infrared detectors. The identity of the unknown species, as well as its range and concentration, may be established by comparison of its spectrum to that for known species.

    摘要: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for studying motion of an object or element, to determine not only quantities of motion but also direction of motion. A laser beam or the like is circularly polarized and directed to two or more retroreflectors and then to a detector. Beams of different frequencies are established and determination of relative direction of motion of the retroreflectors is made from the increase or decrease of frequency of beats of one beam against the other. In one embodiment, left and right circularly polarized light is reflected, and one of the beams is frequency-shifted. The light, being circularly polarized, is insensitive to rotational orientation of the test object, while maintaining directional and motion information.
