摘要: An apparatus (402) and method for measuring a surface energy of a test surface (12), which includes a viscoelastic polymer layer (20), disposed on a moveable component (34), that is compressed against the test surface (12) with a compressive force. The moveable component (34) is then moved relative to the test surface (12) at a predetermined velocity, and a drive force applied to the moveable component (34) is measured. The surface energy of the test surface (12) is then determined based at least in part on the compressive force, the predetermined velocity, and the measured drive force.

摘要: The present invention is a method for forming an object, the method comprising jetting a first material to form a plurality of layers that define a support structure increment, and extruding a second material to form a layer of the object. The layer of the object substantially conforms to an interior surface of the support structure increment.

摘要: A method and an apparatus for detecting relative changes in the surface energy of a test surface by adhering a tacky sampling surface to the test surface and removing the tacky sampling surface from the test surface while measuring the force and speed of removal. The measured force and speed of removal is used to compute a relative surface energy, which is compared to a standard value for that surface. This technique has utility for monitoring the cleanliness of surfaces in printing, adhesive and paint application, display and semiconductor fabrication, and generally test surfaces requiring cleanliness and which cannot readily be transported to or configured for an existing surface analysis technique.

摘要: An apparatus and method for controlling the extrusion of thermoplastic through one or more discharge orifices is described. An apparatus comprises one or more thermally conductive flow tubes defining flow channels in a heated thermally conductive body and terminating in discharge orifices. Each flow channel may be independently valved on and off, by selectively supplying a flow of coolant. An array of flow channels can be independently opened and closed in a predetermined pattern, so as to vary the extrudate configuration of thermoplastic emerging from the discharge orifices. By extruding thermoplastic layer-by-layer onto a base in this manner, a three-dimensional object may be formed.

摘要: An apparatus to transfer heat from a heat source to a heat absorber, the apparatus consisting of a thermally conductive rotor, a thermal transfer fluid, and a composite substrate with an internal cavity containing the thermally conductive rotor and the thermal transfer fluid. The surface of the composite substrate receives the heat source and the heat absorber. An external means impels the rotor to rotate within the internal cavity. Heat from the heat source is conducted through the surface of the composite substrate and through the thermal transfer fluid into the rotor. Heat is conducted from the rotating rotor through the thermal transfer fluid and through the surface of the composite substrate to the heat absorber. In the most preferred embodiment the thermal transfer fluid is a low melt metallic alloy, the rotor is a copper disk, and the rotor is motivated to rotate in the internal cavity of the composite substrate due to eddy currents generated by an external moving magnetic fields.
