Abstract:
A replaceable photobioreactor for use within a cultivation system for growing photosynthetic organisms in a liquid growth medium is disclosed. The replaceable photobioreactor is used holding a liquid growth medium while exposing the photosynthetic organisms to light. A ‘dark tank’ is used in addition to the replaceable photobioreactor for holding the liquid growth medium in darkness such that a day and night cycle may be simulated.
Abstract:
A lower limb prosthesis for a transfemoral amputee, having a shin portion, ankle portion and a forefoot part of the foot portion formed as an integral fibre-reinforced plastics leaf spring component. This integral component is adjustably mounted to a knee joint which has a knee chassis, a cradle pivotally connected to and depending from the knee chassis, and a flexion control unit in the form of a piston and cylinder assembly interconnecting the knee chassis and the cradle. The shin portion has an elongate resilient section of constant cross-section oriented substantially vertically. The connection of this resilient section to the knee joint cradle and the arrangement of the cradle is such that the vertical distance between the knee axis of rotation and the location of the connection is less than 25% of the vertical distance between the knee axis and the lowest weight-bearing surface of the foot portion.
Abstract:
The invention provides for a toilet seat that significantly reduces flush noise. The toilet seat is designed with dosed cell rubber gaskets that help keep sound from getting out of the toilet bowl, but allows equalizing air pressure into the toilet bowl to ensure proper flushing as a totally sealed toilet bowl will not flush properly, The flexible rubber gaskets are attached to the bottom of the toilet lid and the bottom of the seat to seal lid to seat and seat to bowl when the lid and seat are closed. The rubber gasket employs a saw-toothed lip to help assist air flow into the toilet bowl by making the seal less rigid. The toilet seat is designed to fit standard round or oval U.S. toilets, Sound reduction is significant and is between 10 and 20 decibels or approximately a 40% noise reduction based on sound testing.
Abstract:
A method of fabricating a photonic crystal or photonic band gap optical fiber comprises providing a preform that includes a plurality of holes in an outer diameter, wherein the holes extend from a first end of a preform to a second end of the preform, and forming at least one radially inwardly-extending slot within the preform such that the slot intersects at least some of the holes, wherein the slot does not intersect at least one hole. The method also includes establishing a first pressure in the holes intersected by the slot by introducing the first pressure to the slot, and establishing a second pressure in the at least one hole not intersected by the slot by introducing the second pressure to an end of the at least one hole not intersected by the slot. The method further includes drawing the preform into a fiber while independently controlling the first and second pressures.
Abstract:
An inclined hearth combustor which generally includes a primary combustion chamber having a plurality of stepped hearths, a secondary combustion chamber in communication with the primary combustion chamber and a boiler having an inlet in communication with the secondary combustion chamber. The secondary combustion chamber includes a refractory-lined cyclone separator for removing fly ash from combustion gases exiting the primary combustion chamber and the boiler inlet is surrounded by the cyclone separator. The primary combustion chamber may further include an ash transfer ram movably disposed between two stepped hearths, wherein the ash transfer ram includes a top layer of refractory material extending rearwardly from a leading edge thereof. The ash transfer ram may further include a plurality of V-shaped wheels attached to a bottom surface thereof, a replaceable wear plate disposed on a side surface thereof and/or a wiper blade fixed on a forward face thereof. At least one hearth may include two spaced rows of air feed-tubes longitudinally embedded therein for delivering a combustion gas into the combustion chamber. The air-feed tubes may intersect with an air distribution plenum for simultaneously delivering the combustion gas to the air feed-tubes. The primary combustion chamber may further include a reciprocating loader ram movably disposed on the top surface of the top-most hearth for pushing combustible material on the top-most hearth, wherein the loader ram has a bottom surface and at least one longitudinally extending replaceable wear strip disposed thereon.

The latch arm includes a latching aperture to facilitate latching the connector assembly to a complementary mating connector at the second side of the panel.
Abstract:
An electronic firearm lock (10) includes a housing (18) and a locking plate (28) which are locked together rendering the trigger (12) of a firearm (16) inaccessible. The housing (18) includes a locking lever (36) which engages a sawtooth surface (34) of the locking member (32) of the locking plate (28). The lock is unlocked by entering an input code via keypad (44). The keypad (44) is illuminated prior to the pressing of any button (100) by touching two conductors (62) simultaneously by the same object, i.e., a finger allowing the operator to see the keypad (44) before the needing to begin entering an incorrect code. An alarm transducer (82) signals both when a plurality of incorrect codes are entered, indicating an unauthorized person was attempting to access the firearm (16), and when the voltage level of the battery (74) is low.
