摘要: The RF/microwave switch/modulator uses an optically controlled diode 20. The reactance of the diode may be varied by varying the illumination intensity. In this fashion, the photodiode in conjunction with an external circuit can switch or modulate a microwave signal by varying the reactance of the diode using a laser light source or the like. The bias voltage may be varied to electronically tune the diode so that the microwave frequency of operation can be electronically controlled.

摘要: A blower system to remove precipitation from an antenna may include a blower air plenum extending substantially completely along one side of the antenna. A vent is in communication with the blower air plenum and extends substantially completely along the one side of the antenna to direct an airstream across a surface of the antenna to remove precipitation from the antenna. The vent may include a contour to conform to a contour of the one side of the antenna. The blower system may also include an air compressor to force air into the blower air plenum and out the vent to form the airstream flowing across the surface of the antenna.

摘要: A system for bi-directional data content transfer between a plurality of mobile platforms, such as aircraft or cruise ships, and a ground-based control segment. The system includes the ground-based control segment, a space segment and a mobile system disposed on each mobile platform. The ground-based control segment includes an antenna which is used to transmit encoded RF signals representative of data content to the space segment. The space segment includes a plurality of satellite transponders, with one of the transponders being designated by the ground-based control segment to transpond the encoded RF signals to the mobile system. The mobile system includes steerable receive and transmit antennas. The receive antenna receives the encoded RF signals from the satellite transponder, which are thereafter decoded, demodulated, D/A converted by a communications subsystem and transmitted to a server. The server filters off that data content not requested by any occupants on the mobile system. A local area network (LAN) receives the remaining data content and provides same to individual users on the mobile platform in accordance with previously submitted programming requests or data input by the users at access stations associated independently with each user. The transmit antenna is used to transmit data content from laptop computers, PDAs or other user electronic devices coupled to the access stations back to the designated satellite transponder. The satellite transponder then transponds the data back to the antenna of the ground-based control segment.

摘要: A system and method for selectively enabling and disabling wireless connectivity between cellular or PDA users on-board commercial aircraft having a shielded fuselage, and remotely located wireless access points, while the aircraft is at an airport or airfield. The system and method does not require access to an on-board LAN system of the aircraft. The system includes one or more antennae disposed in the cabin area of the aircraft that are coupled via an RF switch with an exterior antenna mounted on an exterior of the fuselage. The RF switch is controlled by a switch control subsystem, and enables or disables communication between the interior antennae and the exterior antenna. The exterior antenna is connected to the switch via a conductor that extends through the shielding of the aircraft. When the RF switch is in the closed position, cellular or PDA users can connect through the interior antennae and the exterior antenna directly to remotely located wireless access points.

摘要: A system and method for implementing soft handoffs in a cellular communications system on a mobile platform. The system employs an antenna controller in communication with a beam forming network that generates two independently aimable lobes from a single beam. The single beam is radiated by a phased array antenna on the mobile platform. In an Air-to-Ground implementation involving an aircraft, a base transceiver station (BTS) look-up position table is utilized to provide the locations of a plurality of BTS sites within a given region that the aircraft is traversing. The antenna controller controls the beam forming network to generate dual lobes from the single beam that facilitate making a soft handoff from one BTS site to another. In a ground-based application, one lobe of the beam is used to maintain a communications link with one BTS site while a second lobe of the beam is continuously scanned about a predetermined arc to receive RF signals from other BTS sites and to determine when a new BTS site has become available that will provide a higher quality link than the link presently made with the one BTS site. A soft handoff is then implemented from the one BTS site to the new BTS site.

摘要: An optical position sensing system for sensing the position of a displaceable element. An electro-optical unit outputs a modulated optical signal and a chirped rf signal. The envelope of the modulated optical signal has a phase that has a known relation to the phase of the chirped rf signal. The electro-optical unit is coupled to a light guide element and receives and transmits the modulated optical signal along an optical path for reflection off a surface of the displaceable element in order to provide a position sensing optical signal. A reference reflecting element is disposed in the optical path upstream of the displaceable element for partially reflecting the transmitted modulated optical signal in order to provide a reference optical signal. A transducing unit receives the rf signal at one input and has another input optically coupled for receiving the position sensing optical signal and the reference optical signal which have, respectively, first and second time delays with respect to the chirped rf signal. The transducing unit produces a multi-frequency electrical signal which includes first and second frequencies corresponding to the first and second time delays, respectively. A position detecting unit coupled to the output of the transducing unit processes the multi-frequency signal in order to determine a difference frequency corresponding to the difference between the first and second frequencies and representing the position of the displaceable element.

摘要: A phased-array antenna (14) is disclosed including modules (12) that respond to optic signals provided by a central processor (16) vai an optic feed network (18). In a transmit mode of operation, the central processor provides optic transmit signals to the modules, controlling the phase and attenuation of the various signals to accomplish the desired steering of the antenna beam produced by the array. A mixer or avalanche photodiode (42) in each module provides suitable optical-to-RF power conversion for the input signal to allow antenna elements (44) in the module to radiate the desired electromagnetic beam. During a receive interval, a received electric signal produced by the antenna elements is combined by the mixer with a local oscillator frequency optic signal applied to the mixer by the central processor. As a result, the RF frequency of the received signal is reduced to an IF frequency for low-cost amplification by an amplifier (52). A ligh source (48) then transmits the received signal back to the central processor for interpretation. The resultant arrangement advantageously reduces the complexity and expense of the various modules in the array.
