摘要: A missile data link filament (12) dispenser (10) is located within an enclosure (20) having a single eyelet opening (26) through which the filament feeds on launch. A quantity of a damping gas having an effective density of at least about two times that of air (28) is provided within the enclosure (20). The gas serves to damp the helical motion of the filament by absorbing its rotational energy, to inhibit ballooning of the filament (12) as it is paid out from the dispenser (10).

摘要: Apparatus (10) for acquiring and tracking a missile (M), and guiding it to a target (T). Beacons (18, 19) are carried on the missile to provide an indication of its location in a field of view. One beacon (18) is a xenon beacon which emits energy in a short wave-length portion of the light spectrum. The other beacon (19) is a thermal source which emits infrared radiation in a longer wave-length portion of the spectrum. A sight unit (20) includes both a xenon beacon detector and a forward looking infrared receiver (FLIR). The FLIR provides two independent channels (A, B) of video. An electrical signal developed within the sight unit is separately processed on both of the channels. One channel is used to develop a video display for an operator for target acquisition and tracking. The other channel is used for missile tracking and clutter and countermeasure (CM) rejection. A tracking unit (40) processes the signal to determine missile location relative to the target; and, if corrections to the missile freight path are necessary, a missile control unit (56) transmits them to the missile over wires (W). If two or more objects (M, D1, D2) are located in the field of view, a module (88) of the tracking unit undertakes a "segmentation" process to differentiate and characterize the objects to determine which object is the missile and which is not.

摘要: Guided missiles (10) which trail control umbilicals such as optical fibers (20) are launched from an array (16) of launch tubes (14) that point in the same direction. A swing arm (40) extends over the face of the array (16) to capture and move the umbilicals (20) of previously launched missiles (10) away from the portion of the array (16) from which the next missile (10) will be launched, to avoid interference between the launched missile (10) and the exisiting umbilicals (20). As each missile (10) is launched, the swing arm (40) recycles to capture the umbilical (20) of the newly launched missile (10).

摘要: An optical fiber (18) payout system for a missile (10) which is to be hot-launched from a tube (12) reinforces that part of the fiber to be exposed to propulsion gases by juxtaposing with one or more wires (24) and encasing within a thermally protective sheath (22) forming a so-called leader (20). The leader (20) extends outwardly of the missile aft end (16) and is releasably secured within a rail assembly (32) by a flexible strip (46) having a line of perforations (48) extending along its longitudinal axis. The outer end portion of the leader (20) is secured to an anchor block (52). On launch, the leader (20) tears loose from the flexible strip (46), the restraining action of which prevents optical fiber predispensing.

摘要: A fiberoptic leader connected between a missile and a launch tube is paid out upon missile launch with a controlled degree of bend in the fiberoptic filament, and is furthermore protected from blast effects in the launch. The fiberoptic filament is stiffened within a leader comprised of a TEFLON sleeve insulating the fiberoptic filament. A protective sheathing of high tensile strength longitudinally wires are disposed about and encase the TEFLON sleeve, and in turn are encased within an outer sleeve. The stiffened leader is led along the longitudinal length of a C-shaped channel attached to the side of the missile. The channel is disposed upon a longitudinal portion of the missile. The stiffened leader is laid against and under one of the channel arms from the aft end of the missile, where the fiberoptic leader is fed out during launch, to a forward end of the missile and channel. The leader is then led across the width of the channel to the opposing arm of the C-shaped channel. The stiffened leader is then led partly aft along the opposing arm of the channel and then out to an open longitudinal slot defining the ends of the C-shaped channel. That end of the stiffened leader is coupled to a fixed point within the launch tube from which point optical communications are provided to the missile during flight. As the missile is launched, the bend propagates down the channel tearing the stiffened leader from a longitudinally perforated tape which secures the leader into and under one of the arms of the channel.

摘要: An optical fiber-guided projectile launch system for firing from a generally tubular launcher comprising a projectile having a tubular casing, an extended length of optical fiber disposed in the casing for continuous streaming from the trailing end thereof, a portion of the fiber extending from the casing for operative connection to a controller, an axial groove in the casing surface for removably receiving a part of the extending fiber, tape securing the fiber part in the groove with force sufficient to withstand axial launch forces but insufficient to resist imposed radial forces, and a communication device providing two-way communication over the fiber. An alternative embodiment uses an un-grooved projectile casing with a tube launcher having a preformed fiber relief-groove in the inner peripheral surface and a discarding sabot having a tab member receivable in the relief. For both embodiments, a controller is provided in two-way communication with the projectile for receiving and processing target data from the projectile and for transmitting guidance data, including operator manual guidance, to the projectile, and an adaptor is provided for guiding fiber streaming axially from a wound bobbin in the projectile.
