摘要： A projection-type display apparatus in which the entry of light rays to the back side of liquid crystal light valves from dichroic prism that composes optical system light synthesizer is prevented. To this end, a projection display according to the present invention preferably includes a color synthesizer for combining colored and modulated light beams, comprising: a square column dichroic prism composed of four triangle prisms having equal refractive index together whose cross sections are right isosceles triangles such that three light valves are located adjacent to three exterior peripheral surfaces of dichroic prism to receive colored and modulated light beams therefrom and; a filter for absorbing light with a specified wavelength range, leaked from surface of dichroic prism at the opposite side of incident light surface and directed to liquid crystal light valve, the filter being located between liquid crystal light valves and surface of dichroic prism. As for construction of the dichroic prism itself, specifically, of the four aforementioned triangular prisms, the first triangular prism and the aforementioned third triangular prism are mutually affixed in a condition in which there is a first step difference in the vertical direction. The first exposed side is formed on one edge of the affixed side of the first triangular prism. Similarly, the second triangular prism and the fourth triangular prism are attached to each other such that there is a second step difference on the same edge, and a second exposed side is formed on one edge of the affixed surface of the second triangular prism. Further, the first and the third triangular prisms and the second and the fourth triangular prisms are attached, with a step difference between them, in such a way that the aforementioned first exposed side and the aforementioned second exposed side are located on the edges facing the same direction; and a third exposed surface that is orthogonal to the aforementioned first and second exposed surfaces is formed between the aforementioned first triangular prism and the aforementioned second triangular prism.

摘要： A technique capable of easily manufacturing a projector without deteriorating too much the optical characteristics of the projector. A projector includes an illuminating optical system for emitting illumination light, an electro-optical device for modulating light from the illuminating optical system according to image information, and a projection optical system for projecting a modulated light beam flux obtained by the electro-optical device. The electro-optical device includes a single-crystal sapphire substrate having nearly a rectangular shape, and a polarizer provided on the single-crystal sapphire substrate on at least one side of a light incidence surface and a light emission surface. The single-crystal sapphire substrate includes a c-axis substantially parallel to the surface of the substrate, and the c-axis has an inclination of about 3° to about 7° with respect to a reference side selected from perpendicularly intersecting two sides of the nearly rectangular shape.

摘要： An optical modulator holder (4402) has an optical modulator holding unit (4405) having a substantially rectangular U-shaped cross-section and made of heat-conductive material, a plate-like member (4406) made of heat-conductive material, and an optical modulator cooling unit (4407) constituted by a hollow member which is capable of enclosing cooling fluid inside and is made of heat-conductive material. Of the optical modulator holding unit (4405) and the plate-like member (4406), peripheries of openings (4405A1, 4406A) each contact heat-transferably a liquid crystal panel (441). The liquid crystal panel (441) is held inside the rectangular U-shape of the optical modulator holding unit (4405). The optical modulator cooling unit (4407) is formed like a ring whose inner side surface heat-transferably contacts the liquid crystal panel (441), and has an inlet port (4407D) and outlet port (4407E).

摘要： This invention provides a technique of reducing temperature rise due to heat generation of polarization control elements. A projector includes: an illumination optical system; an electro-optical device for modulating light from the illumination optical system in response to image information; a projection optical system for projecting modulated light obtained with the electro-optical device and a base frame, formed using material including metal material, for mounting a plurality of optical components arranged on an optical path from the illumination optical system to the projection optical system. At least one of the plurality of optical components is a polarization control component that includes: a polarization control element including organic material for the controlling polarization state of light exiting from the polarization control element; and a light-transmissive member having a thermal conductivity of at least about 0.8 W/(m·K), to which the polarization control element is stuck. The light-transmissive member and the base frame are thermally coupled.

摘要： A projector, includes: a light source device; an optical device that modulates a light beam irradiated from the light source device in accordance with image information; and a projection optical device that projects the light beam modulated by the optical device. The optical device includes: an optical element optically converting the light beam incident thereon and emitting the converted light beam; and a heat-conducting member that is connected with the optical element in a heat transferable manner to cool the optical element. The heat-conducting member includes a heat pipe having: a tube; a capillary structure provided in the tube; and a coolant housed in the tube, the coolant circulating in the tube to transfer heat in the heat-conducting member. An optical-element-side connecting portion of the optical element to be connected with the heat-conducting member and a heat-conducting-member-side connecting portion of the heat-conducting member to be connected with the optical-element-side connecting portion are configured to be in a surface-contact when the connecting portions are connected to each other.
