Abstract: Provided is a production apparatus that can produce a distribution content that offers an even richer color tone expression during playback of video. The production apparatus for producing a distribution content including distribution video data is constituted by an original acquisition unit that acquires original video data; a distribution video acquisition unit that acquires the distribution video data, the distribution video data having been generated by conversion of the original video data to a lower gradation; a difference generation unit that generates difference data between the original video data and the distribution video data; and an output unit that outputs the difference data. A playback apparatus plays back the distribution content.

Abstract: A video display apparatus includes: a tone mapping processor that performs a tone mapping process of converting a luminance of a video by using conversion characteristics according to a maximum luminance of the video; and a display that displays the video that has undergone the tone mapping process. The tone mapping processor switches between a first tone mapping process of dynamically changing the conversion characteristics according to a time-dependent change in the maximum luminance of the video and a second tone mapping process that is performed using constant conversion characteristics irrespective of the time-dependent change in the maximum luminance of the video.

Abstract: A reproducing method includes: an obtaining step of obtaining a high quality image and a first low quality image that are still images showing an identical scene, and conversion determination information; a first determining step of determining whether or not the display device can display the high quality image; a first reproducing step of reproducing the high quality image when the display device can display the high quality image; a second determining step of determining whether or not to generate a second low quality image by using the conversion determination information when the display device cannot display the high quality image; a second reproducing step of reproducing the first low quality image when it is determined not to generate the second low quality image; and a third reproducing step of generating the second low quality image from the high quality image and reproducing the second low quality image when it is determined to generate the second low quality image.
