    摘要: A rotating media storage device (RMSD) includes a disk having at least one track with a plurality of servo wedges, a moveable head, and a microprocessor. The microprocessor receives a plurality of position error signal (PES) values during track following and sums PES values for a plurality of different sets of servo wedges of the track to generate a plurality of shifted summed position error signal (SSPES) values. The microprocessor shifts the plurality of generated SSPES values by a phase shift value to generate a plurality of corrected shifted summed position error signal (CSSPES) values, which correspond to the repeatable runout (RRO) of the disk.

    摘要: A hard disk drive that determines a saturation current of a voice coil motor (VCM) during the acceleration portion of a seek operation, and uses the information to advantageously adjust current profile for subsequent portion of the seek. One example of determining the saturation current is utilization of the peak value of the saturated acceleration current whose magnitude depends on operating conditions such as temperature and supply voltage. Traditional hard disk drives use predetermined seek current profiles that are formed conservatively to account for such variations in the available current to the VCM, at the expense of sacrificing some seek performance. By determining the available current for each seek operation, the current profile can be adjusted on the fly so as to improve the seek performance.

The servo control system is adapted for applying a current to a coil of the voice coil motor thereby causing the voice coil motor to move the head according to a seek distance. The servo control system generates a plurality of seek profiles for each of a plurality of seek distances and a plurality of current limits for the plurality of seek profiles. Each of the plurality of seek profiles defines a plan for controlling the current to be applied to the coil while the voice coil motor is operated over the seek distance. The plurality of current limits each define a maximum current allowed while controlling the current to be applied to the coil.

The mobile device may be a hand held computing device such as a personal digital assistant (PDA) or a mobile terminal such as a cellular telephone. The mobile device includes a host processor for accessing data on the disk drive. The disk drive has a rotating disk media and a moveable read/write head disposed over the disk media. The disk media is divided into a first data storage zone and a second data storage zone. The data storage zones are radially disposed in discrete areas of the disk media and each zone has a plurality of tracks for storing data. The mobile device may write data to the first data storage zone when the mobile device is in a mobile environment. The mobile device may write data to the second data storage zone only when the mobile device is in a non-mobile environment and may not write data to the second data storage zone when the mobile device is in a mobile environment.

    摘要: A disk drive system for use in limited power applications is disclosed. The disk drive includes a spindle motor having two or more windings, along with a spindle motor driver which can drive the spindle motor in any of a unipolar, bipolar or tripolar mode. The bipolar or tripolar mode is used to start the disk drive and then the unipolar mode is used to operate the disk drive while data is being retrieved. By combining the three drive modes a large start current reduction and higher rotation velocities are achieved. Current consumption is further minimized by adaptively transitioning from bipolar to unipolar modes of operation. The disclosure also includes a general methodology for optimal motor K.sub.E and K.sub.M parameter selection.
