Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for mode-locking a fiber laser at a pre-selected frequency wherein a doped fiber segment contains a narrowband FBG and an electro-optically tuned FBG, thereby making obsolete the need for an EOM to modulate the laser's wavelength. The present invention also provides a method and apparatus for mode-locking a fiber laser at a variable frequencies wherein a doped fiber segment contains two electro-optically tuned FBG's. The electro-optically tuned FBG may be fabricated by a thermal poling process.
