Abstract: A light modulation layer of a display panel in the present invention includes shape-anisotropic members and liquid crystal molecules. The projected area of the shape-anisotropic members on a first substrate and a second substrate is changed by altering the voltage applied to the light modulation layer, which changes the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules. According to the present invention, it is possible to increase light use efficiency with a simple configuration and to control light/dark switching in both directions at a high switching speed. The present invention is applicable to a television.

Abstract: Provided is a display device including a first light emitting layer having an island shape, a second light emitting layer having an island shape, and a third light emitting layer having an island shape, between a lower electrode layer and an upper electrode layer. The first light emitting layer and the second light emitting layer are adjacent in a column direction, and the third light emitting layer is adjacent to the first light emitting layer and the second light emitting layer in a diagonal direction. Abstract: A liquid crystal display panel (100A, 100B) includes a transverse electric field mode liquid crystal cell (10), a first polarizing plate (22A, 22B) disposed on a back surface side of the liquid crystal cell (10), and a second polarizing plate (24A, 24B) disposed on a viewer's side of the liquid crystal cell (10). A liquid crystal layer (18) contains a nematic liquid crystal whose dielectric anisotropy is negative. The liquid crystal layer (18) has Δnd of less than 550 nm, where Δn is the birefringent index of the nematic liquid crystal and d is the thickness of the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal layer (18) is in a twist alignment state when no voltage is applied. When polarized light whose Stokes parameter S3 takes on an absolute value |S3| of 1.00 enters the liquid crystal layer (18), |S3| of polarized light having perpendicularly passed through the liquid crystal layer (18) is 0.85 or greater. The first polarizing plate (22A, 22B) and the second polarizing plate (24A, 24B) are circularly polarizing plates or elliptically polarizing plates whose ellipticity is 0.422 or greater.

Abstract: The present invention provides a transflective display device which is high in transmittance, can secure sufficient brightness in display, and can display black. A transflective display device 1 includes a display panel 2 and a backlight 3. The display panel 2 includes a substrate 10 having an electrode 12. a substrate 20 having an electrode 22, and an optical modulation layer 30 containing shape-anisotropic members 32. A frequency of a voltage to be applied to the electrodes 12 and 22 is changed so as to rotate the shape-anisotropic members 32. When the shape-anisotropic members 32 are oriented such that their major axes extend in parallel with one of the substrates on which the shape-anisotropic members 32 abut, multiple reflection of incoming light is caused, and thus black is displayed.
