A transmitter includes a baseband frame generator configured to generate a baseband frame comprising a baseband header, a data field, and a padding field; and a mapper to map a plurality of data streams to the data field, wherein the baseband frame generator is further configured to insert a padding length field indicating a byte number of the padding field in the baseband frame, and insert a padding indicator field indicating information about the padding length field in the baseband header.

A transmission device is disclosed. The transmitting device comprises a processor for generating a packet comprising a header and a payload, on the basis of an input packet, and generating a frame comprising the generated packet, and a transmission unit for transmitting a signal generated on the basis of the frame. The processor inserts padding into at least one packet from among a plurality of packets included in the frame, on the basis of the number of packets included in the frame, the length of each input packet included in the frame, and the lengths of the packets. Here, the boundary of an input packet may be included in a packet into which padding is inserted.

A method for generating a packet of transmitting apparatus is provided. The method includes: setting a value of a Deleted Null Packet (DNP) counter to zero; increasing the value for each deleted null packet preceding a non-null transport stream (TS) packet; and generating a packet comprising a header and a payload, wherein the header includes a DNP field, the payload includes the non-null TS packet, and the value of the DNP counter is used to set the DNP field.

A transmitting apparatus, a receiving apparatus and methods of controlling these apparatuses are provided. The transmitting apparatus includes: an input processor configured to process a plurality of input streams to generate a plurality of base band frames; a bit interleaved and coded modulation (BICM) processor configured to perform forward error correction (FEC) coding, constellation mapping, and interleaving on the plurality of baseband frames; a symbol generator configured to add signaling data to the plurality of baseband frames output from the BICM processor to generate an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol; and a transmitter configured to select at least one of a plurality of pilot patterns based on a fast Fourier transform (FFT) size and a guard interval fraction, insert a pilot in the OFDM symbol according to the selected pilot pattern, and transmit a stream including the pilot-inserted OFDM symbol. Thus, a data transmission rate is increased and accurate channel estimation is performed, through inserting different pilots according to different FFT sizes and guard interval fractions.

The signaling information including input stream synchronizer (ISSY) mode information, receiver buffer size information required according to the ISSY mode information, and time information representing a time between a P1 symbol of a preset frame for transmitting a user packet and an output of a preset bit of a first user packet of the user packet.

The transmitting apparatus includes: a baseband packet (BBP) generator configured to generate a BBP including a header and payload data; a frame generator configured to generate a frame including the BBP; a signal processor configured to signal-process the generated frame; and a transmitter configured to transmit the signal-processed frame. The header includes information about a type of the payload data, whether an additional header exists, a length of the payload data, and a Least Significant Bit (LSB) of the length of the payload data. Therefore, various types of data are mapped on a physical layer based on information included in the header, and data processing efficiency is improved.
